That's what the head and valve cover are for :D

I painted the valve cover grommets in the color I am contemplating for the valve cover. I think it's a bit too red though (duplicolor Hemi Orange engine enamel)

I dinno man, gives a very mandarin orange hue to it, and I think it looks pretty good against the blue.

Engine and mani look good. And that orange does look good with the blue.

Hmm, maybe I need to recalibrate my internal color matching device. I'll spray up the valve cover and see how it looks.

And thanks guys for not commenting on how badly my stove needs to be cleaned. lol

I decided to skip painting the transmission in favor of keeping things moving along. (If/when I blow the LSD, I'll paint it then, haha.) I just scrubbed it down with some degreaser... I'm pretty happy with how it cleaned up for just an hour of elbow grease.

I also got the head and valve cover painted. The head is Duplicolor engine enamel in aluminum, and the valve cover is Duplicolor Hemi Orange engine enamel. I'm going to put a coat of clear on the valve cover too, but first I want to sand the raised letters to get a little bit of a machined/brushed finish in them. Eventually, the intake mani will be done in the same aluminum as the head.

I'm pretty happy with how well the Duplicolor stuff matches the VHT Flameproof paint I used on the turbo mani. As long as I'm clocking the turbo, I might remove the housings and do those in the aluminum Flameproof also. Oh and the downpipe through the flex section too... lol

i like the valve cover, i wasent to sure about the hemi orange but it came out nice, judging by the picture i might do my valves on my MS miata and take off the red they have.

I wasn't sure either... it's a bit more red than I had originally imagined, but I think it's going to look alright in the blue engine bay. I might do a couple other pieces in the same color... maybe the strut bar and something else, but I don't want to go overboard.

I was all excited to finally bolt the head down saturday night, until I realized that the channels for the head studs were too narrow to fit any of my sockets down.

I came a c hair away from just buying a set of OEM head bolts (they use a hex key vs a socket), but I was able to track down a thin wall 14mm deep socket that I could verify was small enough to work for me. Should be here tomorrow or wednesday.

From there, the only thing I can see causing delays is if I need to re-shim any of the valve lifter buckets. But they measured in spec 15k miles ago, so I'm hoping nothing has changed.

Today was a busy day. Got the head all buttoned up, valve lash checked (all right in spec!), cams timed, etc. All ready for the valve cover. Speaking of which, I got the letters on the valve cover sanded like I wanted them, and put on a couple coats of clearcoat. Intake mani is painted in aluminum engine enamel just like the head (removed the VTCS flaps as well). Removed the turbine housing from my little baby turbo, got it cleaned up and ready for the same high-temp enamel I used on the turbo mani.

(pics to come later)

Does anyone have a pair of large snap-ring pliars? I bought a set, but they aren't large enough to get on the bigass spring clip that holds the compressor housing on the turbo. I need to get that thing out so I can clock the turbo to fit properly.

Yes sir!

One last look at those shiny pistons before they are locked away

I haven't torqued down the valve cover yet, because I'm going to try painting the timing cover silver like the head and everything. I don't like the black so close to the orange valve cover... looks too halloweeny. In fact I'm starting to wish I had done the whole block in silver, because it looks so damn clean. Oh well, maybe next time! (the color is a bit off in these pics... my camera doesn't seem to like the lighting in my garage)

Lookin good. Though I do agree on the timing cover. Doesn't look to halloweeny as it were, but it looks off having the black there, when the rest of the head is silver.
