You should get another one. They are going for pretty cheap these days, but getting ahold of something unmolested isn't easy. What are you rocking these days anyhow?

sold the GTi about 2 weeks ago for $8500.. can't complain.. I only bought it for $9600 2 years ago so I guess you could say I made money on it?

but now I drive a '98 honda crv with awd ... it's fun ... well at least the awd is but that's about it.

When I sold the GTi I started looking at msp's again and most that I found were well over 120k miles.. no good....

Rods, pistons, bearings, main/head studs, seals, gaskets, and new oil pump all showed up this week. I'm waiting on ordering the head gasket until I know for sure if the head needs to be milled down at all. Otherwise, I think I'm going to target this weekend to start disassembly.

Started on disassembly the other day. I had gotten most of the intake out before I remembered to take some "before" pics. So here it is, the old ghetto-ness from every angle:

Welp it looks like my build might have just gottten a bit more expensive. Noticed quite a bit of oil on the bottom of the turbo. There was no puddle on the ground for me to see because it looked like all the oil was dripping on the downpipe and probably getting burnt/washed off... so who knows how long its been leaking. That makes almost exactly 60k miles since the original turbo sprung a leak and got replaced under warranty... at about 60k. Not a good track record so far.

If it does in fact need replacing Ill probably be shopping for a disco tater and putting off head work till next season =/

I do remember when you had your leak, because mine followed right after yours..

You didn't know MSPs had engine monsters? I thought everyone did. After all, that's the only thing that separates them from subarus, who have boxers in the engine bay.

As you can see from Picklz' post, the engine came out today--thanks to the help of Tom, Colin and Matt. We hit a few small snags, but nothing that couldn't be solved with a BFH and some cursing, haha. Picklz posted the lulzy pics already, but here's a couple more from engine removal day:

It's hard to see in the pics, but I only had about 2-3" between the end of the hoist's boom and the ceiling in the garage.

Some of the wiring was looking a bit messy, so I decided to clean it up a bit

Popped the valve cover today, and noticed that one of the lobes on the exhaust cam had a rough, rusted appearance at the peak. The rest of the cams have some slight signs of wear on the lobes, but only the one is actually rusty like that. Any thoughts on this? It hasn't been all that long since I've driven the car... probably about a month.

As long as the lobe itself ends up in spec, I wouldn't worry much. Probably a *little* bit of starvation up there, which means the motor didn't have a ton of time left, but as long as you clean it up fine and the surface that actually touches the valve for actuation isn't off kilter, you'd be fine. Prolly just got a little condensation in it when you pulled the coil packs or something.
