tipping results

So I decide to see what car brand owners tip the most, I have been doing this research for about 4-5 weeks, im not gonna say that I had the chance to write down each and every single order I had, but I did bust my ass writing down all the cars that tipped and that did not. The majority of this research was done around January 2009. My job description is to take down their order through the phone, and have it ready for them once they arrive; now I do go outside to deliver it to their cars about 40-60% of the time. So my results are here…

What are these tips being paid on?

Also, from a statistical perspective, I'd say you probably need around 10 samples per vehicle type to really be able to say anything. I project porsche owners will still stay at/near 0%... lol

I think this is a neat idea, and I agree with Jay that more samples per vehicle type are needed.

In addition to needing more cars, you probably need to poll at more locations too. Otherwise, your results will only reflect against people who live in/near Minnetonka. (And in my experience, Minnetonka is full of assholes.)

And I agree with Colin too. In minnetonka I'd guess that a lot of the people driving mazdas, for example, are going to be the children of the people driving porsches. And if you think porsche owners are dicks, their kids are probably 10x worse. hehe

its all food jay.
well there are only 3 locations in minnesota, minnetonka, edina, and roseville. so i believe its not only people from minnetonka, but more from its surrounding area up to maple grove and down to eden prerie. so i think it has a wide variety.
but still 73 cars recorded are alot

That's a cool idea, I look forward to seeing what further results will show. Have you been recording the % of the tip as another result? That might be interesting as well. I know when I pick up food, I still tip but it's in the range of a couple of bucks since the work involved is only a fraction of what a waiter at a table would be required to perform.

I generally look at pick up food tipping at around 10% where I tip around 20% for a sit down meal. I agree with the above statements on statistical sampling, but let's also consider that Ivan is only able to report on his personal experiences, so it's an allowable limitation.

I think it's a solid idea, but lots of factors to consider. Value of the meal, lack of sitting down and using service, income of individual parties, and even the need to impress someone (date night?).

Jana and I tip anywhere from 10% to 20% based on the service and food quality. Always start knowing I'll add 20% to the bill, bad service will just save me money.

That being said, Jana and I need to get back to Mac Grill Ivan, nom nom nom.

well the cheapest dish is $7.47, so that is the lowest bill that i usually do. and everyone is dead on, on how you should be tipping, in the official tipping guide theysay togos should be getting 10%, because of the less involvement, but its still a hard job when busy and you have 6 other orders in, but there where a few times when i took the food out when the weather was in the negatives and came back empty handed.

I think this is a great idea. There are far too many people who don't tip properly. But is it wrong that I never tip when they put a tip Jar out??

I used to throw my change in the tip jars at coffee shops, but then when every single business I visited started to have a tip jar, I decided to stop. If tipping is a genuine part of your pay structure, I'll tip regularly. If it's just a grab at some extra cash, then impress me with your service or else YOU GET NOTHING!

coffee shops are wierd, there are usually 2 people there, one that punches the button and the other one that slaves away making the coffee, i dont thing a person should get money for just pushing a button, unless he or she is the only person working there and punches the button and also makes it for you. thats why i dont expect a tip when i just ring up a gift card, cause all i do is just punch a button on the screen

Well, the person punching the buttons is normally the one that is getting me my coffee at Caribou because I don't get the fancy drinks most of the time. That said, I consider it the same as a takeout order, so normally I throw in a buck or change every few times I go, as I use a gift card for my actual coffee purchases.
