The official Mountain Biking Thread!

Alright let's get a roll call of all those interested in Mountain Biking! Purpose of this thread is to discuss trails, components, bikes, and the like.

I used to go all the time, haven't had a bike in 3-4 years though. I decided to change that this spring, I was going to get into an entry level but quality MTB like a Rockhopper, Hardrock, F7, or something similar; however I decided to go with a custom build instead. I'll post pics of the build in here as it progresses.

Anyway I'm planning to do a little of everything this summer from Paved or gravel XC trails to some more technical and single track stuff like out at Lebanon, I'm hoping to make it up to Lutsen for some Downhill action but we'll see how bad I suck once I get the bike built lol.

Post pics too if ya got em!

Here are some good links, figure I'll post em here so I can keep track of them myself.

I have an 05 Rockhopper Comp. No disc brakes, but it stops good. I need to get the rims trued before spring. My only mod to the bike was swapping the pedals, I refuse to ride clips/traps anything that locks my feet in, so I swapped em for a set of BMX flats with adjustable lugs. They're calf grinders but they work awesome.

I has 2007 Specialized Crosstrail with tires that aren't for anything rough, but fast on pavement... May be swapping the tires out in spring...

ROFLGOLF has bike rack for 4 bikes, so if anyone is up for some riding I'm always game.

Lots of Specialized fanboi's in here :p they make nice bikes. I'm still debating between clipless or platforms, the idea of having my feet locked in is kinda scary, and I know I'm gonna fall and look like a noob for a while, but they give you so much more power especially for climbing, guess we'll see.

You able to ride hard pack drit Josh? Theres a 20+ mile trail that goes west out of Plymouth not too far from me that's pretty nice.

Hard pack dirt no problem.

For pedals, what I have is one side for clips, one side for normal shoes. I think its the best thing you can do to your bike, improves riding so much. Tom will disagree, but you're welcome to try mine out if you'd like.

Matt- decent platforms are like 20$. I can understand the want for clipless, I just like the idea of being able to bail if I have to.

I duno about $20, but they are cheaper.

From the people I've talked to that ride clipless it becomes second nature unclipping when you are going to bail or dismount. It's just that learning curve.

I think it's worth a shot, I'm a ways off from buying pedals anyway, got a lot more stuff to get before I'm worried about that lol.

Dude, Josh has ridden my meatgrinders. They grip like a mofo and they were literally 20$ at the local bike shop by me. IIRC they're mongoose pedals. Not quite as good as Oddysey, but I rode some Mongoose stuff back in the day, and these seem solid.

I has a wal-mart special that is so heavy you can't bike more than like 10 miles without dying.

I just like the power on the "up" stroke, (ya that's what she said... bla bla bla) but it's nice on the uphills.

Yep I'd say climbing is their greatest advantage. Didn't know Afton was open for riding in the summer, that's pretty cool. Gonna have to check that out as well as Lebanon.
