It says he spends up to 250 hours on a car. That only works out to $44/hr gross pay. Throw in equipment and supplies (wax @ $12k per tub!?) and he's not exactly pulling in huge bank. A decent living and a great job, though to be sure.

The "up to 250 hours" part doesn't mean he spends that much time on every car he does. With the kind of demand the story implies, I suspect he's probably pulling down a comfortable living. Heck, that garage he's working out of looks a lot nicer that something a guy making $20 a hour could afford.

No, but he also doesn't pull in 11 grand for every car he does, so it's probably reasonable to assume that the most time-intensive jobs are the most expensive ones. Plus, he's working out of his parents' garage, hehe.
