Paintball Talk

Picklz and I are getting into paintball and thus it seems appropriate to have a thread for discussion on the topic.

I've played a few times with rental equipment, etc and had a good time... but lacking someone else interested never got into it really before. Now that someone else also wants to start playing, time to buy equipment.

Right now I'm thinking pretty basic to start.
I'm almost dead-set on a Tippmann A5 marker. First upgrades will pretty much just be an adjustable stock, remote line and HPA bottle. If I can find a good deal on a flatline barrel along with the marker, I'd go that route, but I don't think I NEED an upgraded barrel right away. Future upgrades may include an APEX barrel/barrel tip for increased accuracy and others TBD based on gun performance. Possibly a response trigger if I can't crank out paint fast enough.

As for gear...
Mask: http://www.ansgear.com/V_Force_Armor_Black_p/vforcearmor.htm - cheap, but has great reviews. I know the mask is the most important thing, but damn that's tough to pass up with such good reviews.
Some sort of 4+1 pod harness to keep my air tank and extra pods. Obviously would want pods to keep in it.

O HERRO THAR!

I played back in highschool and college, had a decent electronic marker and everything but those I played with quit or moved, etc and I sold it. Have played a few times since then using rental equipment, but being Dan is interested in playing I too am looking at buying my own setup again, because lets face it, rental gear is so-so at best.

I'm leaning towards an A5 as well due to their large aftermarket support, proven track record, cyclone feed system as well as reasonable price. I am leaning towards the reflex trigger system which uses air to reset the trigger more or less allowing for almost full-auto like firing if desired, while still maintaining single shot capability and mechanical firing (no electronics).

I'll start collecting all the info I have gathered so far and get it formatted into a somewhat useful post here shortly. I agree on that mask you posted though Dan, very likely what I'll end up buying for now.

I assume you guys are going to be favored more towards woodsball / objective type games (judging by the A5 favoritism)?

protip:they dont need to...ive been on the minnesota airsoft association forum for about 2-3 years now.

Do I have to keep the orange tip?
No. There are no laws in Minnesota which require your gun to have an orange tip, or prevent you from removing the orange tip.

Minnesota Statute 325f.81 requires a "warning label" to be included with replica/toy guns, but that does not apply to projectile-firing weapons.

Having an orange tip will NOT protect you from criminal prosecution, and it will NOT ensure you don't get shot by a responding law enforcement officer if you are doing something illegal, reckless, or stupid.

It is important to remember that THE ORANGE TIP IS NOT A SAFETY DEVICE!
a quote on the MAA from my neighbor, a police officer.

theyre really only used (federal law) for shipping and importing

Yes (for me anyway JT) Woodsball and Objective games, possibly some indoor objective/scenario type games but not a big fan of speedball. Also for that reason not real interested in autocockers.

As for Airsoft It's just never really appealed to me as something that Id be interested in getting into. Also lol @ less painfull, man up! There should be consequences for getting shot!

I spent a good amount of time over the past couple days reading barrel reviews, I was originally looking at the 'flatline' barrel by Tippmann which puts spin on the ball, creating a flatter trajectory (quite desirable in woodsball) and longer range as well. From what I can gather though the Flatline tends to be somewhat temperamental with paint (breaking some kinds on a somewhat frequent basis), and it is also harder to clean as it is not easily removable from the gun.

Another manufacturer sells the Apex barrel system, it is similar in that it puts spin on the ball, but does it using a tip with adjustable ramping that'll allow more or less spin, as well as setting up trick shots so you can curve balls around corners or setup dive-bomb shots. Reviews seem much better on this than the Apex and it is compatible with many barrels out there as it is just a tip that fits on the barrel.

Thus I am looking at going with this setup right now for a barrel:

Apex 2 Tip - http://www.ansgear.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=EMPIREAPEX2BARRELTIP&CartID=1
DW (DeadlyWind) Null Carbon Fiber Barrel - http://www.deadlywind.com/p/103/null-carbon-fiber-barrel
DW Apex Adapter - http://www.deadlywind.com/p/106/fusion-apex2-adapter

Not 100% set on this combo, but the barrel itself is getting wonderful reviews, I'd like something that doesn't require an adapter, I found a different cheaper option for the barrel that does not require an adapter but it is only in 12" and I was looking at a 14" barrel so have to keep looking and weighing those options.

Another thing - I've been reading up more on some different markers and I'm strongly considering an x7 Phenom or BT TM-15, both operate at low pressure (200-300psi) vs 600-800psi of normal guns like the A5, this results in more shots per tank and is easier on seals and paint and such I guess.

The BT TM-15 is attractive to me is it has a lot of cosmetic stuff I was considering doing to the A5 already done, reviews suggest it's a decent amount quieter too which could be an advantage. Downsides are it's fully electric, the Phenom if battery runs out will operate on mechanical only in semi auto so that's a big plus, x7 also has the cyclone feed system which negates the need for a mechanical hopper.

16" Tippman "sniper" barrel (and original barrel)
Upgraded "squishy" cyclone paddles
Polished Internals

Barrel Condom

Pure Energy 48/3000 Steel HPA tank
CF wrapped xx/3000 HPA tank (CI unknown, though it is clearly bigger than the 48ci)

awwww yeah. Electronic markers! Why the phenom instead of the crossover? IDK anything about the two but the crossover looks better.

And what does an autococker have to do with speedball? All I mentioned was their closed bolt design and they claimed it was more accurate. My friend had an autococker that he used for our woodsball games and it was pretty cool.

I'm not a fan of the 'speedball' style markers, much prefer the milsim / more realistic looking guns so the Crossover wasn't really a consideration for that reason.
