MNMazda spring cruise - 2012 edition!!

All I have to say is that we were careful. Despite AJ's rant about us young whippersnappers. The patch of dirt that caused the incedent was the first one we hit. And the patch itself was over a crest in the road. Giving very little time to react. Picklz, followed by mike in the cobalt, and my speed 6 hit it with a fair amount of speed which caused the dust cloud. After that, nothing much could be done. I barely touched my brakes going over it and i could feel the brakes trying to lock up. I'm just glad everything ended up fine. That's what's important. No one got bashed up, nobody got pulled over, and everyone made it home in one piece. And we all had a funny story to tell.

I think the point still remains that maintaining a safe following distance is absolutely important for exactly this reason. If <insert whatever event/object> caught someone unable to slow down or avoid it, then they were following too close, plain and simple. It's lucky nothing serious happened, but it's also important that everyone understand that even if the gravel patch was unavoidable, the situation that resulted was definitely avoidable.

No lecture, no judgement... them's just the facts.

I'd recommend that for the next cruise someone pre-drive the route and either note locations like this on a map so everyone is aware prior and the correct behavior at these section can be discussed prior to the cruise or reroute around such obsitcules to avoid these situations all together. Pointing fingers and calling people stupid may make some feel better, but it doee nothing constructive and solves nothing.

Agreed fully on pre-driving the cruise routes.

And I didn't read AJ's post as finger-pointing or ranting about whippersnappers. It was pointing out that--while we go on cruises to have fun--safety, maturity, and situational awareness needs to be the first thing in everyone's mind. That should be the case you're driving to the store or to work, and it should be doubly so when you're engaged in some spirited driving with other cars.

Everyone had a safe distance. When matt mike and I first hit the gravel there was plenty of room between us. All of the cars went all accordion when no body could see what was ahead.

To be frank I didn't call someone stupid, I said it was a stupid action, one I've been guilty off.

End result, it was a fun day, no one got hurt, and those who where not there need to step back a bit as it wasn't that big of a deal due to no one getting into anything serious.

Right, I thought we did a pretty good job of it.
Considering our stopping distances were assumed to be on dry road. When it, without notice, changes to gravel and we still have time to stop without any damage, I'd say we've done at least a fair job.

FYI, remember the rule of 1 car for every 10 mph, that's for normal highway driving... let that sit in and then tell me if everyone had a "safe" distance.

I was a good 4-5 car lengths behind mike when we hit that crest. Not sure about anyone else. I know my boundries. Most everyone there did. All it takes is one person.

I'm sure I'm guilty of being way too close at times and I apologize for that...this was my first cruise and I should have been smarter in that sense, but there were plenty of other times where I did leave enough room. I know nobody is pointing fingers at me, but if anyone (especially Matt or Dan) thought I was too close, I do apologize...last thing I want to do is fuck up my DD and what he worked hard to buy.

As for the dust cloud...I do remember trying to hit my brakes right before hitting the gravel and two things I remember, one it felt like my car was hydroplaning and I was going to lose control so I let off the brake and two because I didn't slow down enough or because I was braking in the gravel, that didn't help any.

Overall it was a ton of fun and nobody did get hurt or in trouble which is important. I do think we should have some good ground rules set for next time though and I made myself aware of a few things that I should or shouldn't do next time around.

On a side note, my suspension has more squeaks, rattles, and creaks to it now after the cruise :(

Hopefully I can take my car into Stellar soon and have them give me a diagnosis of all that needs to be done. I'm all ready looking around trying to determine if I want Koni's with my Pedders or if I want to go to a coilover setup. I'm also trying to piece together everything else I know I need replaced. Next cruise, if my car is where it should be suspension wise, I won't have any trouble...makes me want to try Auto-x as well.

Let's not dwell on it.

The cruise was the last straw for my tires.
One keeps going flat.
Not that they didn't need to be replaced anyway. I guess it was nice to get a little more out of them.

Sadly, I'm almost in the same boat...my front tires are nearly gone and I don't want to waste money on replacing them until I get my new wheels...I may have to install my winter wheels for a while again or else find some super shitty/cheap used tires to make it through the summer.
