MNMazda Music Lovers' Thread

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm always looking for ways to get introduced to new/different music, but don't always have the time to go searching it out. So I thought this might be a neat idea for a thread, where we can share some of our tastes and hopefully find something new that we might not have otherwise listened to. I don't want this just to turn into a one-way list of our current playlists, so here are a couple of loose ground rules:

-Don't flood the thread. Keep it to one or two songs per day per person. Maybe explain what you like about that band/song.
-Try to keep things a little out of the mainstream. There's no point in posting something here if you can turn on the radio and hear it twice an hour, lol.
-Before posting a new song, listen to at least one other previously posted song (ideally one you've never heard before)
-If something catches your interest (positive or negative) post a short comment/impression on what you listened to--what'd you like or dislike, any suggestions based on the song posted, etc
-No trolling or blatant disrespect. If you don't like something, at least be able to articulate why like an adult.

Like I said, "loose" rules based on what I'd kind of like to see out of this thread.

I'll start it off...

I've always liked these guys, even though they don't really fit in with a lot of my other tastes. Most people know their one radio hit No Rain, but IMO they've got a ton of really great songs. Something about the bluesy feel mixed with a bit of funk just seems to work when I'm in the mood for something less heavy or aggressive, but still engaging. That, and I'll freely admit that my taste in music is very 90's, for whatever that's worth... haha

Cool right up my ally!

Discovered these guys last winter and immediately got hooked. Seriously one of the best I have come across in a long, long time. I can't say enough about 'em. The drummer has a unmistakably sound and groove to their whole discography. I'm a drummer, so I tend to key in on that aspect...but I digress. Granted most of their stuff is on the darker side, but it is so tasty. They have a strong Pink Floyd hook which is cool since they go from an beautiful almost "ballad" sound to a very edgy hard rock feel with again, a strong percussive pulse. I'm not into their earlier stuff, but their last 2-3 albums are my favs. I would say "Night is the New Day" + "The Great Cold Distance" are the ones to get for starters. Not a bad tune in the bunch. Also, the mastering is wonderfully done, super rich fidelity.

F%&%$ killer! OK, seriously straight up rock and roll. I came across this guys recently and after a few listen's, am totally hooked. Great, great tunes. Jason Bonham (Led Zeppelin drummer's son) is the drummer, Joe Bonamassa + Glenn Hughes share vocals, Derek Sherinian on bass. That should say enough right there :)

Heavy drums and guitar feel type of music.

Bonamassa (prodigy type) needs no intro - awesome bluseman and great vocal range, very unique. Hughes raspy vocals, well that's his signature and fits SO well. This is just great hard rock/blues that grooves and feels wonderful :happydance: Check it out.

Of course YMMV

That's not too bad. I might have to look into them a bit more. The song sounds oddly familiar though... I had a co-worker who was really big into that sound a little while ago (he was also a drummer), so I wonder if I haven't heard them before.

Kind of on the same dark prog-rock theme, I've gotten into some of Rishloo's stuff lately. I think Pandora threw them into my "Tool" station, and I can definitely hear the influences... kind of a more "intellectual" take on metal on some songs and an almost experimental sound on others. I'm not 100% on board with all their music, but they definitely have a handful of songs that really grab me. My favorite is probably Freaks and Animals http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7YdrN4qUsQ It probably edges into what a lot of people would consider "emo" metal, but hey... if you can get past the blue hair and excessive eyeliner, some of those bands aren't terrible musically.

Hmm, interesting thanks. Musically sounds pretty good. I'll have to investigate further. Initially it this reminds me kinda Iron Maiden'ish but he hits some notes that sound like Maynard from Tool.

Just to add to Katatonia stuff, there is some great sounds coming from that part of the globe => Riverside (Poland), is REALLY worth checking out. Incredible vocals (Mariusz Duda) which I'll add additional info later.

This is from "Anno Domini High Definition". Get it:) The song below builds, so you have to give it a little bit. Listen to it in it's entirety.

"Rapid Eye Movement" is the other to get.

Gives me a Coheed feeling, which I'm still not sure is a good thing or not.

I'm going to digress into a totally different genre here, but I can certainly follow suit into the dark progressive rock theme if it's trending that way.

This cat, Jonny Craig, has been a staple to my listening ears for the past couple years. He's been involved with Dance Gavin Dance (think post-hardcore) which is a top 5 band of mine. He was also the frontman for Emarosa, Isles & Glaciers, and Ghost Runner. Currently, he's on a solo-kick from which the links above stem from. It's a very different style, almost soul-like, and his tones are much more apparent and varied in his solo album. Give it a listen...

It's a more 'work-friendly' type of sound. The ladies actually enjoy it when I'm listening to this album.

Cool, I'm digging it. Thanks. It has an Incubus vibe going on.

I love new stuff, doesn't matter the genre. I'm always looking for something that has quality - has substance. Too much cookie cutter, studio magic, pro tooled BS nowadays.

Glad you like it. I totally agree about the over-production of music these days.

I used to be pretty big into the local rock scene back in high school. My favorite local band goes by the name of Johnnyrook. Been to a lot of their shows and they always put on a great performance.

Although their style has changed a bit, they've added a more hardcore sound with the influence of a new guitarist. It's a very different sound you'll likely never hear on the radio.
Not to mention, who has a freakin' acoustic guitarist in an Indie/Alternative Rock 4-5 piece band these days?

^ They're more progressive/post-hardcore/emo, and the acoustic is only in a handul of their songs.
How about Anthony Greene's solo project? Avalon has a ton of acoustic stuff.

Listened to "Blue Sky Noise" yet? It's interesting to me that Circa will release completely mastered acoustic variations of their own songs.

I need to take more time and go through this thread again. I have a pretty wide taste in muzak. :D

I'M OFFENDED!

I just heard this song for the first time this morning. Pretty killer IMO.

Also, if anyone likes non-pop west coast/socal punk, listen to Authority Zero. The guitars can get kind of monotonous at times (but what punk song isn't 3 chords) however, the lead singer has a killer range and unbelievable lyrical skills. The man has his chops.

Bumping this for my favorite local band releasing a new album on April 22nd!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxM3QyablSI

I've been listening to these guys for nearly a decade and their progression is simply incredible. Their foundation has stayed the same but they've evolved over the years and have put out some amazing tunes. Give those ears something good to listen to...

Indeed they did. Lead singer, James, left the band for a good amount of time and they split after their 'farewell' show (which was an incredible performance for the record).

Within the past 6 months or James re-kindled and so their 3rd child will be born April 22nd.
