Getting a Job out of state...

...Has anyone done it?

Just wondering how one goes about job hunting out of state. I suppose it depends on the industry and type of position you are looking for. Undoubtadly it's easier to move to the new location and then find work once you are there, but also carries a greater risk. And it seems easier to find a Job when you have one currently.

I know I've seen some positions that will consider local candidate's only. Just wondering what other's expereinces are (if anyone's had any).

I was in a similar position a while back. I found that it was considerably easier to transfer to a position while still in the same company. I know with us in any event, depending on the job, they may conduct all of your interviews over the phone, and ask for faxed resumes etc. If they REALLY want to see you face to face, they MAY offer to fly you down there for the interview.... but you only see that in big stuffed shirt type jobs. My guess is you'd be doing most of it over the phone.

Yeah, I wouldn't be opposed to even spending the money myself to do a face to face interview if it was a pretty solid deal other than them just making sure you aren't a hippy w/ tie dye shirt and that you can interact with people well. Good to hear at least some companies will do that.

If I could transfer within I would, but unfortunatley we have no offices in any areas I care to go.

That's the beauty of what I do. Sure I work for big bad healthcare, but we have offices everywhere. Including Hawaii.

Yeah, we've got offices around the US and Canada, unfortunatly they are mostly on the coasts (NY, Boston, Houston, San Fran, Seattle, etc). Hawaii would be killer other than the cost of living being rather high. Can you imagine waking up there every day, what a life.

This is along the lines of what I deal with everyday in a Relocation Company. Generally you'll do a few phone interviews and form there, if a company knows it's a relocation issue they'll fly you out and the costs are usually handled by a policy. Large company's will generally cover those costs, and if they want someone bad enough they offer a relocation package. You will never know until you ask what kind of relocation assitance programs they offer, and that would be a main question to ask up front.

I relocated from Pittsburgh to Minneapolis last October.
My major advantages were having good education, have work experience, and the job market here in Minneapolis is crazy for IT.

I did the usual, find stuff on monster, but the one that worked out was from the Star Tribune. So looking for ads in the paper of where you are looking to move would be smart.
I also Googled up what major corps had offices around here and applied directly off their websites.

I ended up flying up here a few times for interviews, but the offer I ended up taking was all done over the phone.

For my field, no one really seemed to care that I was 1,000 miles away. It was about experience and education so I guess it could be an exception.

Some employers did, some didn't.

The one I chose would not, they were a non-profit. Banks and Retailers seemed to always offer a relocation reimbursement.

I got to claim all costs at tax time too.

Yeah, the is the upside, all the cost of moving would be deductable now being it was for work. Generally the company would cover those extra costs, but then you'd also be taxed on that additional "income" as it's a benefit.

It was alot cheaper than I anticipated.
I got two of those cube things you pack your stuff in and they freight it up here.
I moved all my stuff for about $1,300.00. Not to shabby.

Not any one specific area, but defiantly not hardware or support.

So were are you trying to move to Matt? Why you thinking of the move?

I'm just kinda gettin a feel for what all is involved and steps that can be taken. Not sure I'm actually going anywhere. Thinkin about heading out west, likely Colorado, this state is so damn flat :(

I've done that it's not that bad.. it's mainly just driving to the interview that sucks
