Das Goat

Project Das Goat

I've been asked about details of Das Goat (My 04' GTO) on a few occasions, and I have some mods that I'm planning that we have been discussing in the chatbox which need further discussion so I figured a thread was in order. I'll start with background of the car and how it stands today then move into mod discussion!

Car is an 04' GTO, Red w/ Black interior (has the door/dash/trim panels from a red interiored GTO) I had a black 04 back in 2005 and really liked the car, this one already had a few of the annoances of the car fixed or improved and also had a lot of the mods I would do to the car already done, that along with the price made it the car to buy for me. It was a California car so I flew out and drove it back (getting stuck in a Blizzard in TEXAS on the way back, FML).

Here's what the car had done to it when I picked it up:

FAST 92mm Intake Manifold, NickWilliams TB, TrickFlow 215 CNC Heads, 36lb Injectors, Upgraded Valvetrain, CompCams 226/226 .569/.569 114 LSA Cam, Kooks 1 7/8" LT Headers, Basanni Split Dual Exhaust, ASP Underdrive Pully, AMW Catch Can, MSD Plug Wires, 160* Stat, LS2 Timing Chain, LS4 Oil Pump, Lingenfelter Performance Engineering Intake, 3.91 Gears, B&M Shifter, 05' Hood, SAP Front Grills, SAP Front Bumper, SAP Sideskirts, SAP Rear Bumper, Pedders Springs, Struts, and Radius Rod Bushings, Ruff Racing 280 Wheels (18x8.5 and 18.9.5), and some other Misc stuff.

Front (Taken before I left Cali):

Car made 422whp @ MAP this spring through 3.91 gears which generally read ~10hp lower than stock gearing, seemed like the clutch was holding up alright as well. I want to get a HPTuners setup and retune the car as well as check on the rev limiter, I had them shut down at about 6300rpm on the Dyno, I may redyno after tuning and push to 6500-6800 as the Cam that is in there def. likes the higher RPM's, all in all the car is sitting power wise about where I expected for the mods that it has.

Fast forward a couple months, sometime in June the transmission locked up on me, I pulled it out (thanks for the help Jay!) and tore it apart to find the reverse gear needle bearing had been all but destroyed causing the reverse gear to nearly seize to the mainshaft. There were a few other worn/damaged items as well. I wrestled with the idea of just rebuilding the trans and selling the car, possibly buying a z06. But I really like the look of the car as it sits, and enjoy driving it, so I decide just investing some money into it and keeping it was the way to go.

The car has around 50,000 on it, and the stock clutch  being its dealing with nearly 500bhp I decided that had to get replaced along with the transmission. So at this point I have ordered a Level 3 monster clutch, pilot and throwout bearings, Billet Flywheel, New Slave Cylinder and a Remote Bleeder. Also ordered a RedLineGoods shift boot, E-brake boot, and Arm Rest covers to match the rest of the red/black interior.

On Tuesday or Wednesday of this week I'll be placing my order for the Level IV RPM Transmission.

Im also consideiring a new shifter setup. It has a B&M shifter which has gotten less than stellar reviews from nearly everyone in the GTO community, and I don't much care for it. The GMM Ripshifter and Billet Products shifter both seem a lot nicer but are rather spendy so I haven't decided if I'm going to pull the trigger on those yet.

The battery also needs replacing, planning on putting in an Optima but if anyone has other ideas/suggestions feel free to offer them up.

Future Plans:

As far as power goes, I'm pretty much at the end of the line for cheap/easy power if I want to keep the car streetable (which I do). My options are either more cubes or a power adder of some sort (supercharger, turbo(s), or Nitrous). I'd love a supercharger, but for this platform they are silly expensive, and I'd likely be tacking on some upgraded internals to do that in addition to the S/C. Turbos are kind of the same story. So that leaves me investigating the cubes/nitrous options. I'm open to suggestions / comments on the options. None of this would be done this year, though it's possible depending on what route I decide to go that I would start on it late in the winter or next summer.

In the mean time I'm planning on focusing on some support / improvement mods such as fuel system and brakes till I figure out what to do about MOAR power. I also want to clean up the engine bay and dress it up a little which brings us to the end of this post.

So the engine bay is, for lack of a better way to put it, a mess at the moment. While I've seen worse, its far from good looking. So my project this winter is to fix that and dress the engine bay up a bit. I'm already planning on pulling the Intake Manifold off to see if its ported (and port it if it isn't) so while its out I'm planning to sand and paint that. Tom has suggested that he's pretty decent with an airbrush, so I may have him do some form of design on the intake manifold. I'm also considering pulling the coils and coil brackets out, painting the coils and fabbing a coil relocation bracket for either side of the engine, then having the valve covers painted (and maybe some more of Tom's handy work).

I'm kind of trying to come up with some type of theme for the paint, Tom and I had discssued a Goat Skull + RealFlames on the Intake, however with the shape of the intake it would be very hard to get that looking half way decent. Another thought I had is doing the intake and valve covers in black, and some form of red spider web type design on both. Something similar to this:

Note I'm seriously considering N20 Next year, if I do that direct port will be very tempting, which could tie in well with the spider style design.

Anyway I'm open to suggestions on items to replace/paint/add or otherwise dress up, as well as any ideas on a theme. I'll try and get some better pictures of the engine bay as it sits today once I find my camera charger. For now all I have is a cell phone pic that is a fairly close-up shot of one side of the engine.

So the goat will stay in MN, I like you idea about the goat skull but like you said it is less then easy to paint on the manifold. You could go with the web design but i say you take some time and come up with an original design. At any point in time if you need help removing and painting stuff give me a call.

I may take you up on that Nate once the car is parked for the season. I am still working on coming up with some other design ideas besides the web, I like the web idea but certainly am not set on it. I'm open to ideas/suggestions as well which is major reason behind this thread.

I'M OFFENDED!
I wish that the mani was flatter, because it could take to some rad old school pinstriping quite well.

T U R B O! :D

Oh, and an Evil Goat skull breathing fire would be my vote for the mani.

AJ- look at the mani. I'm not sure I can create that on that surface. I'm good, but not that good.

Yeah, I'm thinking something more abstract is what will be needed for the intake.

You know, something Jay was considering once, was lightning over his engine cover. Red lightning could look good.

I've seen lightening done, and I don't mind it. It could be really cool done in Red, I hadn't considered that.

Red lighting... paint the mani like a wicked deep burgundy flake, red lighting, washed out to pink centers to make the colors really pop.... yeah.

Im not sure if I have the ability to do a flake paint job, I was thinking of keeping valve covers and Intake black, but maybe do intake a darker red and leave the valve covers black, then red lightening on both, hmmm.

IF you're going to do lightning on them, the colors need to match.... but black with a red clear would look rad.

I'm limited to what is available in rattle can + wet sanding and such, unless I go out and buy a compressor and paint gun, which I don't know that I'm going to do right now.

mndsm

You know, there are compressors out there, that come with kits, that already have paint guns in them.

Jay is right though, your basic gravity feed gun is like 50$ at HF. Get a compressor from a more well heeled member.... and call it good.
