NARWHAL
Some of us mods have been trying to come up with cool things to do as a club during the summer besides the usual detail and dyno days and one of the ideas Tom had was to run some kind of road rally for you guys. We absolutely do not condone street racing or other speeding on public roads, so we were really struggling with a way to run a rally on public roads in a manner that would encourage people to take their time and obey the laws rather than just race from one place to the next as fast as you can.
Anyway
I was reading Jalopnik the other day and I came across an interesting read about "Gimmick Rallyes," and they seem to fit the bill prefectly for what we are looking for. (Here's the article I was reading: linky)
The general idea is that everyone meets up at a starting location, is given a few sets of instructions, and is unleashed to navigate their way to the finish. Each car is required to have a driver and a navigator (since reading the instructions over and over again to make sure you don't miss anything is a bad idea while driving) The fun part is that the instructions are purposely written to be deceptive and tricky to decipher. Things that look like typos may be deliberatly used to throw people off track. Other seemingly irrelevant things can become very important as well. There are a few different types of Rallyes and there is more info here.
Anyways, again...
There's a local corvette club holding a Rallye on May 15th. I've contacted the organizer of the Rallye and it's open to anyone who wants to show up. There is a $20/car registration fee, which could easily be split between the driver and navigator. The flyer about it is available here.
Neither Tom nor I have ever done anything like this before, but we're both pretty excited about it. If anyone else wants to go and wants to find a driver/navigator, post up! I'll try and keep a list going up here of people interested in going and whether you need a partner or not.
It sounds like a great time.
