Fuel economy in your Mazda (or other car if you don't have a Mazda)?

We took our 2012 Soul (2.0L) on a road trip out to Grand Forks this weekend, and milage ranged from 31mpg going 70 with 2 passengers, all the way to 26mpg going 80 with 4 passengers. We see closer to 33 or 34 driving at 60 on the freeways in the city. Clearly not the most aerodynamic vehicle!

I get 23-24 in everyday driving on my 6. Generally about 20 on the RX-7.

Drove a Cruze in Florida about 300 miles. Trip computer said only 33 - 34 mpg overall in highway driving. Was very disappointed by that for a compact.

Only the 1.6L in the base models is GDI. The 2.0L is still a standard multi-point injection system (though it does have improved milage and power over the 2010-2011 2.0L)

What I am noticing is that the mid size and some full size cars are getting very respectable mileage compared to their compact siblings.

However, the impala is just crap. Junk. I hate driving them. I would rather drive a Prius.

Yeah, I've been noticing that too. One of the big factors is that at freeway speed, and given a car tall enough to comfortably seat adults in an upright position, you actually need something as large as a mid/full size car to achieve a really good drag coefficient. So when you're talking about mating an engine that can produce "acceptable" acceleration in both a compact and a full size car, the larger car starts to have an edge in cruising fuel economy. As you go forward from the 80's compacts have been getting a more and more upright seating position. At least that's my theory on why larger cars seem to be catching up with compacts.

That and the common mindset still seems to be that anything over 30mpg is "good", regardless of the car. So, that's kind of been the benchmark, and it really hasn't changed much over the years.

35.4mpg in the civic this last fillup. Love this car the most on the day's I fill it up, $28 on tuesday.

Yep, SkyActiv! A pretty peppy engine for the size. Sucks though I'll be out of factory warranty within a year.. LOL

I've been averaging 29-31mpg in my Mz3 2.5, with a roof rack on it. As soon as I throw on the A/C though... it drops a couple mpg though. I guess that's understandable. :)

Just a hair over 28mpg on mostly hwy with a 07 MS3. That's with the A/C on and moderate boost on a few on-ramps. I want to tweak more with my Cobb AP, then make a seperate MPG map that should push me well over 30mpg on hwy. I haven't taken a true city mpg test, but recent mixed driving has shown about 24.

When I first got the car, I was getting about 16-17mpg in the city & in winter. Was not happy about that. It'll be interesting to see what it is this coming winter after I've fixed some things, modded other things, and tuned it.
