Who wants to help with a science project?

I'M OFFENDED!
Not really. But i'm kind of thinking that since i'm going to have some extra cash soon, I want to build something that i've wanted to build for a long time.

I want a Hyundai Excel hatchback with a 4g63 in it.

Before you naysayers think it can't be done, let me clue you in. The Hyundai Excel was built with the 4g62, which was a smaller, non-turbo variant of the venerable mitsu powerplant. The motor mounts are the same, and a stock Hyundai 4-speed can be used. I know all the technical specs, but I lack the wrench turning ability, and sadly, the tools (I sold my big ass toolbox and all my tools, thinking I was moving to Texas.) So, I figure that this might be a chance to hand out and actually turn some wrenches. I'm on the lookout for a car, and an engine. Anyone interested in playing along?

Damn, you had my ears all perked up at "science project", being the science nerd that I am. Nonethless, I'm intrigued... I think I'd be all over getting my hands dirty in a project like this.

It IS science Jay. It's all about physics. weight vs. power ratio, and what exactly it's going to take to get me killed in the thing.

I don't have a ton of experience (or tools for that matter) Ive got the basics, sockets, box end wrenches, extensions, etc. In any event I'd be willing to help out however I can, always wanted to work on a project like this.

Nah, no motor donations. 4g63's can be had all day for about 500$, and i've seen honked Hyundais go for as cheap as 100$ or less. Hoping to find one with a solid-ish tranny, and maybe a honked motor. This should all go together cheap with that, and if I find a decent running one, I can maybe even sell some parts to get money back.

Where can you find a "running" 4g63 for $500? I cant say I have seen one that cheap. If its not running, you are looking at 500-1000 minimum for a rebuild, if you do it on your own.;

Nah, you can do it. Seen em online. It'll just be a matter of finding the right one. Maybe in a Talon that has a launched tranny.

its been done,i have helped do it, heres the bad news you will need a diffrent master cilnder. also the wireing harness is a major bitch and you are going to need custom ic pipes as well. fwi that stock hyundai trans will not hold the power of a stock 4g63.

heres the naysayer part - it will be slower than a stock gst and the rack will not hold up for long either

also have you thought of how porrly it will stop compaired to the gst? that hyundai has rear drum brakes also the 4g63 is about weighs 150 lbs more than the single cam thats in the hyundai so that will lead to problems.

all that said i will help you do it if i can find time

also i may know of a dsm with a blown transfer case that may sell cheap

I will buy the DSM, if hes willing to let it go cheap. Dont buy the whole car just for the engine.
