What Truck/SUV would you buy and why?

The Aviator was the next step up from the Mountaineer, so that may be a good one. It has been discontinued in favor of the MKX. The Mountaineer is an example of a car, at least on the inside, that really gets it right. The power retractable running boards on some models are really cool too (and were sturdy underneath my weight bouncing on them.)

Considering what I have seen of Touareg's I'd stay away from them. The reliability seems lacking on them.

Touareg and BMW both concern me for long term reliability, they have nice amenities but that's not enough for me to chance it. I do like the Aviator's a lot, but that's really the only one I see that matches the mileage and price I'm looking to hit and I don't care for the exterior color (and have no idea what color the interior is).

Id like to own a Thundra or tacoma!!! Both ultra reliable and keep there value really well. Something like the guys at MAP has but I like the blue that toyota offers them in.
Used to have a Ram,dakota,tahoe.

All I kept was the 95 nissan pathfinder with all terrain tires for the winters! Extremely reliable and lots of fun to drive in the snow or mud!!! :)

The problem with the Tundra and Tacoma is you pay a very substantial premium for them over other excellent and reliable options.

I won't argue Toyota's overall reliability (at least up till recently lol) however as i stated earlier I really didn't care for the older style Tundras, and the latest gen have a fair number of issues - in a pickup a Toyota simply isn't a consideration for me.

You're concerned about long term reliability and you bought a first year model car with a newly developed and engineered motor? WTF mate?

I didn't suggest an Audi, the Bimmer will last ya for plenty of years.

Yeah i dont care on the older tundra looks. But the new ones look realy nice. Its strange consumer reports gives it an excellent reliability rating for RWD models but for AWD models Its not so good. An artical said they baised this of the 2007 model year wich is a changed model so we gotta figure they are going to have to work out some gremlins. But I know toyota has already caught on to this. Toyota has alot of work on there hands right now! BTW check these stats out that I just found. Did not know you can get a supercharger under warranty with it!!!
TRD supercharger
Toyota began selling a bolt-on TRD supercharger kit for the 5.7-liter V8 Tundra during June 2008. Power output is increased to 504 hp (376 kW) and 550 pound-feet (750 N·m) of torque. When the installation is carried out by a Toyota dealership the existing warranty remains intact.[20] This kit features Eaton's TVS Roots-type supercharger which utilizes twin four-lobe rotors, a design shared with the newly introduced TRD Aurion, C6 ZR1 and CTS-V.[21] MSRP for the kit is set at $5,875.[22]

Edmunds tested a TRD supercharged Tundra which completed the 1/4 mile in 13.3 sec @ 103.8 mph (167.0 km/h).[23] Edmunds previously tested a naturally aspired 5.7-liter V8 Tundra which posted a 14.8 sec @ 93.7 mph (150.8 km/h) time.[24] Motor Trend's test of the supercharged Tundra resulted in a 1/4 mile of 13.0 sec @ 106.3 mph (171.1 km/h). This Tundra needed 4.4 seconds to run from 0-60 mph.[

I'll second JT's suggestion on getting a X5. it sounds silly, but I've ready some pretty interesting forums from guys who do nothing but haul stuff around who say that the x5 is an AMAZING hauler. They refer to the taught suspension, broad power and excellent braking for their exceptional towing ability.

As far as the X5's reliability, Edmunds at least suggests that it's very reliable: http://www.edmunds.com/used/2008/bmw/x5/100954865/reliability.html

Personally, I'd rock one based on the looks, amenities, towing capability and performance.

Given BMW's track record for the long-term reliability of vehicles, and the cost to fix ANYTHING that goes wrong...I cannot bring myself to look at them.

With the 2004-2008 F-150's you have a large interior, strong frame, awesome tow and payload capacity. For the items you want you are probably looking at a Lariat trim or FX4. I am personally looking for a FX4 or Lariat, under 60k, for under 17k. That means I am stuck with an extended cab. I was looking for a crew cab, but didn't want a 5.5' box and a 6.5' box is a HUGE truck. I have about a dozen or so trucks on my list, just waiting for tax returns.
Anyone want to buy an Audi?

That being said, I am in the same boat as you. I need a truck for around the house stuff, and I want to do more fishing this year. The F150's do have the electric transfercase option which is really nice, usually only in the xlt+ trims. Leather is harder to find than sports cloth, and sunroofs aren't very common (I kind of want one with a sunroof).

The 2004 and 2005's have the spark plug issues with the 3 valves, 2006 is when ford starting putting the 1 piece plugs in AFAIK. 2005's have injectors that sometimes stick open and lock up the engine, but ford extended the warranty on the injectors to 11 years or 120k.

I"ve also looked at Chevrolet trucks and some SUV's. The problem for me with an SUV is hauling stuff for the house. Appliances or lumber, engine stands, etc..all hard in an SUV, why I am settled on a truck. Most of the F150 guys in the 04-08 range are getting 14-16mpg city, and 16-19mpg highway with properly maintained and tuned vehicles. Some get 12 all day every day, but I think a heavy foot and big tires play a role on that.

Good luck in your search, if I see anything out there, I'll send a link to you Matt.

Well I want to thank everyone for their feedback and opinions. I picked up a 06 Mountaineer AWD V8 last night. For my needs it was the best fit for the miles and price I was looking to pay, haven't really put many miles on it yet but so far I love the thing.

F-150 was a consideration and your right the open bed makes hauling larger items easier, however I do that so rarely and have access to a trailer if I need to, so the benefits of the SUV were of more value to me.

Awesome!

Well keep us posted with how it treats you. Did you trade in the Mazda? Pics?

Matt... why I was recommending against the Touareg:

$2500 repair for locking rear diff when I bought it... That was warranty so OK. I'm up to $2200 worth if repairs that should've been covered under warranty. Now we are looking at $12000 for a new engine & labor and the warranty company is now saying they will only cover $3000 of the repair. Looks like lawyer time....
