What Engine Oil Do You Use?

So I really should do an oil change on this new MS6 and I'm just wondering what you guys use in this MZR engine. Also what kind of filter do you use too? I was thinking of getting the Mazda Genuine oil filter but is it worth it? My buddy had a TSX and used the Honda/Acura oil filter and it seemed to be a much more quality product than whats out there at your average parts store.

I know when I had a mazda3, the cartridge filters I got directly from mazda were actually pretty inexpensive compared to what retail stores carried. Especially if you were willing to buy a pack of 12.

I would stick with the mazda filter unless you want to swap out the cartridge filter for a spin on (that will take a new conversion kit). Then you can get a little larger filter so you can fit 6 qrts no problem.

I use Pennzoil Platinum in the MS3, have since new til 60k miles.

Also, I get my filters from NAPA. Cheapest deal I've found and they're no different than the Mazda OEM ones IMO.

I used Shell Rotella Syn T6 5w-40. You can get away with 5w-30.

It's formulated for direct injection applications and the used oil analysis claim it to be the best for DI and turbo applications.

It's also dirt cheap at Walmart, like $20/gallon.

I just went with the Mazda filters as well.

A lot of people have found that Pennzoil Platinum works very well in the DISI. I use Mobil 1, but my car's just a wimpy NA...and for various reasons, Mobil 1 actually isn't the best choice for the DISI anyway.

Pennzoil Platinum in the DISI's I've owned, as has been said PP seems to work very well in the DISI applications, mainly for it's ability to handle the high level of fuel blowby our cars seem to have. I've heard good things about Rotella too. I have been using Napa gold filters on all my cars for quite some time now, for the money they are great filters, sometimes you can find them on sale too (I usually buy 4-5 of them at that point).

PP Euro spec almost deserves a cock punch JT.

The most important thing about oil is changing it. other then that the fight about what oil is better will go down in forum history as no one will ever know.

I'd agree if it was any other engine but the DISI. As most of us know, it can be very temperamental. People have various results with different products. I'm just passing along what I've read from the oil analysis in these engines. Take it for what it's worth.

Every used oil analysis from this engine that I've seen has put PP at the top of heap, in terms of engine wear and viscosity (or whatever term they use when measuring). How much weight you put on this data is up to you, but I prefer data, even limited data, over speculation when making these types of decisions.

pretty much... I"m not to picky anymore.. as long as it won't break the car.. and I change it on time

I use Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 and a Syntec oil filter- both from Walmart. The Syntec filter is cheap and is build better than the Fram filters (unless Fram has stepped up their game). And I still change my oil/filter between 3-4K regardless manufactures specs. One good investment is an oil filter magnet... I have seen first hand the magnets catch things that would slide through oil filters. I used to use Rotella but they have recently started to reduce the amounts of ZDDP content in the oil (which is what made it so good). And as stated above, PP rates pretty highly in these engines. And as far as I know, Rotella only sells in a 5W-40 weight... And I am a strong believer in running spec oil weights because Variable valve timing is or used to be dependent upon oil pressure/viscosity. I do not know if it will have that effect on the MZR. But I still hold that school of thought regardless.

Food for thought: There is a synthetic rating scale, and I do not remember it exactly but I think I will be close.... Most synthetic oils, including PP rate in the "stage 2" oil category for synthetics, Mobile 1 rates as a "stage 3", Amsoil a "stage 4" and Red Line a "stage 5". So if money is not an issue, I would say Red Line should be the best, BUT a DISI is much like a diesel, and different oils work better than others in certain engine environments.
There is a reason German engineering recommend Mobile 1 in there vehicles.

Some of the above is fact, and some opinion- Take it for what it's worth
