Here is a link to a place that can get you all set up with this distro.

I have switched to this on my home cpu. I made a server and will update you all on how it is going.

Also if you have any info and even better a link or two post it up here.

Please keep on mind this thread is for the Ubuntu distro only!!!

I have Gutsy installed @ home on a 512 mhz 300 meg ram dell. Runs better than your daily workhorse corporate PC w/ XP.

Solid choice Nate..... Why did you set up the server though? Are you going to be doing l33t h@x0r things?!?!

For what I want to do at home a server was the best choice.

I am sick of always needing to update my 30+ gig of mp3s to everynew system I get. Also my family has 4 different comps. I wanted to keep all of our data in one place.

I have downloaded the CD Image, but I have yet to install. I've got 2 HDs and am thinking of installing this on the HD that I don't use. Not quite sure how to do it, but I'm sure I can figure it out.

You can actually boot from the Ubuntu CD and use it without having to install it to a hard drive. It's called a "live CD", it's a fully-functioning Ubuntu install that runs right off the CD. If you decide you want to keep using it, then you can run the installer and copy Ubuntu to a hard drive.

I used to use Fedora, and have since moved to Ubuntu 7.04 Server for my routing and IM services here at home. That's on a 1.5 ghz P4 with 512 ram and a 20 gig hard drive.

I also have a server out on a very fast connection running 6.06LTS. It's running an Athlon64 3200+ single core (recompiled kernel to run specifically for this), a gig of RAM, and a 20 gig hard drive. I use this server for webhosting and running a cs:s and tf2 server. It's also a guinea pig for various fun things.

Finally, I used to (has since been replaced and I'm awaiting approval from IT) have an athlon64 3200+ on 1.5 gigs of ram and an ATi 9800 Pro running 7.10 w/Beryl at work. Sadly, that machine was replaced with a Core2Duo with a currently unknown amount of RAM, a generic graphics card, and Windoze XP.

With that all said, I'm still quite new to Linux. :(

So far, my experiences have been nothing but awesome and very fun. The downside (upside for me) about Linux is that everything is constantly in beta, and you have to work to make shit work *exactly* how you want it to, especially if it wasn't designed to work that way before. ;)

Linux is cool, but I'm actually digging UNIX more. I have half a dozen FreeBSD servers at work, and I'm starting to play around with NetBSD. Command line ahoy!

Im running ubuntu H beta, runs good but FF beta 3 is freaking out on some streaming movies and hotmail. My rack server i have debian on it at the moment. Nix is sweet though soooo many opensource/freeware apps. I found good usenet and irc ones, that and i plug my iphone in and bam i can grab pics off with out issue. Beryl is also amazing (compiz fusion). gotta love lighting your windows on fire to close them ;)

If you're running Beryl (or compiz-fusion since beryl is just compiz in beta form), you're gonna have video streaming issues. It's quite known, and I forgot whether or not there's a simple fix. check ubuntuforums :D

its not running now...well huh, i dont have it actively running to my knowledge although I know it comes installed in the new ubuntu, i should double check that its turned off fully. my video drivers never fully installed, tried both my nvidia card and ati...grrr i hate old video cards sometimes they never work with ubuntu, specially ati. ive done all sorts of searches to get my video to work, the only video card i could get to work in ubuntu was my powerbook g4. my desktop cards require some massive modding of the conf and other crap....im kinda to lazy for that.

On the contrary, older cards tend to work better. ;)

The ATi 9xxx series cards were the best and easiest to get working.

Even though Ubuntu comes installed with Compiz, it isn't enabled by default. In order to enable it, you typically need to manually enable composite extensions, which involves modifying /etc/X11/xorg.conf by hand.

are you kidding?! i have never got my 9600xt working once with any driver but the generic visa one. I had 2 linux freak friends try and both gave up. Given ati is a @#$@# to get the drivers working in linux, but my motherboard doesnt help either. I think the only chance of getting it to work is Gentu. Now I tried my nvidia because of all the rave of nvidia drivers working with no issue....yeah didnt work either in ubuntu H beta. Older stuff works better, just not on the hardware i have :p

This talk about having to resort to advanced tricks to get hardware to work in linux makes me a little bit worried about my plans to run linux on my HTPC...

Can anyone alleviate my fears, or am I likely to be stuck searching through forums and doing a lot of manual work to get things like a TV tuner card working?

well the stock vesa drivers work fine...i just want to run 3d support. they arent to bad to get them to work, but it is some manual work to edit the conf and figure out why it isnt working...like a weekend project ;)

So I just built a new rig(intel core two duo 2.2Ghz, geforce 8800gs,2gig ddrII800mhz) and I want to get linux running on it ASAP. I want to run some games on it to test out my new rig. I heard id games work on linux like doom3 and quake4 so I want to get those running. What is the best distro to get up and running fast and easy with games?

So far I have tried two distros gentoo and ubuntu. And I can't get very far with either. Gentoo starts loading up stuff and then goes to a shell where I can enter commands wich don't seem to do anything. Ubunto takes me to an option screen where it doesn't seem to recognize my keyboard so it counts down to 0 and then begins loading but right after that the screen goes blank so I assume it doesn't recognize my graphics card either at that point.
