The OFFICIAL 2012 MNMazda Main Events Thread

ohsixspeedsix

Owl Exterminator!!
Hello members and guests alike!!

So here is the deal... Tom (aka Mr. hotshot, big bearded head honcho, ruler of all things) has blessed me with the opontunity to serve as the site's events organizer. What does this mean you ask? Well, MNMazda has been lacking many things. Member base, attention, and just plain lacking in general. One major thing missing is good events. I would like to up the enthusiasm on group events. So I'm going to do my best to really focus on getting some fun events together during the summer and even during the off season.
I will definately be puting more thought into new events. I'd like to see things like disc golf league/tourneys, cars & coffee groups and cruises, group autox and track days, and assorted household events like bbqs and poker nights hosted by Matt's "Angry Picke Card Club[SUP]tm[/SUP]" :pickle:

The purpose of this thread isn't just to bore you with lots of words in an introduction!

I'd like to hear everyone's input and ideas here as well. This will be the main "hub" for events. A home for feeling out interest in events and sharing ideas for good events you think of. If you dream it, we can build it. And if you build it, they will come.

Guests reading this??? Quit lurking and get in on this! :lurk: All serious thoughts welcome.

Members??? Thanks in advance for assistance and cooporation. Especially to the hosts of said events.

Edit:
I will be puting a list of potential events into this post. I will update it regularly according to new ideas and such.

Cars and Coffee:
I know it's a pain for some people to wake up early just to go to a car show. But in reality, it's a great venue for promotting the site. I'd like to see us get stronger groups of us to go out there this summer. Wash em', wax em', and get em' out there.
MNMazda Spring Picnic:
Yet another proven event from last year. Join in for some potluck style grillinz and family entertainment. The park last year worked great. A covered picnic area, disc golf course, tennis courts for some rc dorifto fun, and a playground for the kiddies. If it goes well/better than last year, we could possibly have a summer/fall picnic as well.
BAG Days:
The BAG[SUB]c[/SUB] aka AJ's Big Ass Garage, has played host to many great events. The BAG suites all your needs for Install days, Tint days, and Detail days. Last years tint day was a blast. Yard games, BBQ, and some disc golf really made day. Window tinting was just a bonus. :D
Go Karts:
As mentioned by picklz, Kocato has a sweet go cart track that has some great deals if we get a large enough group together for some friendly competition.
Proving Grounds:
Another MAP hosted event, features a wide variety of racing from auto x to drifting. It would be sweet to have a large group of us cruise on up there together. Whether you are racing or spectating, it should be a highly entertaining event. I have a cabin on MilleLacs we could stay at if it comes to that as well.
Cabin/Camping Trip:
This is an event that has been done as well. I've never attented, but from what I hear, it is a blast. There are many options for this. We can stick to the usual, get a campsite or 2 in the superior area (cascade, tetaguchi, goosebury, split rock), or a cabin of some sort (including my own).
Dyno Days:
A great idea that could use some further discussion. MAP has a dyno, which as I said before will be in use at their boost for boobies event.
Updated 1/20
MNMazda Photoshoot:
This was talked about last fall but never came through on a count of we couldn't get everyone together. The idea was to get as many of us as possible together for a group car photo which would be used as on a poster/banner/flyer for the site. I think this is an important one and I'd like to get it done right away in the spring so that we can use these posters/flyers throughout the summer.
Adopt a Highway:
Matt had a good idea to adopt a section of highway and do some clean up on it. Feels good to do something good and it's a good way to spend a day and get the MNMazda name out there doing something helpfull.
Morries BBQ:
One of my favorite ideas. Quite simple. Go to Morries Mazda, hang up some flyers/posters, grill of some foodz, and treat customers to some treats while they shop. As Picklz said, it's a win win for all parties involved. And it's an especially good oportunity for the site to get good publicity.
Updated 1/25
Baseball/softball/kickball Day:
Had the idea of doing this last year but never really threw it out there. It could be cool if we could get together a bunch of the members, head to a park and get a friendly game of whatever together.

Confirmed Events:

Allignment day: April 14th
I talked with Justin at Stellar Autoworks in plymouth, and worked out a group deal. Basically it will be $500 for the day for up to 10 cars. So if we get 10 cars, it will be $50 a piece. Normal price is $100 a car, so this is a great deal. I'd like to start getting a list together of people who think they are going to make it. Since we max out at 10 cars it will be first come first serve. Which means if we can get more than 10 cars it's fine because if anyone drops out, the list will move up. Once a date is set and details are worked out, I will start a separate thread for the event.

Boost for Boobies: April 28th
MAPerformance put this on last year and was pretty cool. Food, cars, and dyno testing - which has also been mentioned, so maybe we can kill to birds. And all proceeds go to breast cancer research, treatment, awareness, and screening. It'd be cool to get the MNMazda group to attend together and promote the site.

Spring Cruise: May 19th or 20th
An obvious must for any car group. Last years trip was fun with a group of about 6-8 cars I think. Great use of a weekend morning with some Wisconi back roads. And feel free to bring a passenger. I'll probably need Jay's help as far as getting a route locked down.

Amery Airport Speed Runs: June 9th and August 25th
Two auto-cross events at the airfield in Amery, Wisconsin. Traditional timed solo run Auto-x with a twist... or more a straight... a half mile high speed runway straight to be exact. Come out and represent the crew!

Brainerd Proving Grounds: June 22nd through the 24th
The annual racing weekend event put on by our sponsor MAPerformance. Auto cross, time attack, drag racing, and drifting along with car show and awards. Hopefully we can get at least a few members to attend and represent MNMazda, even if it means just spectating and cheering for the home team.

If we do a Dyno Day (which I'd love to see again) I will be participating with das zed provided its late enough in the year that the good cormfed fuel is around. One thing on that front - it might make sense to try and partner with another car club or two for this - helps with bringing costs down and it's good to have more interaction with the car community as a whole IMO.

I'd still love to see us sign up for an adopt a highway section/sign and go out and clean up the roadways once or twice a year.

There's always been talk of doing a grilling day at morries, show up with a number of cars to put on display, and grill fudz for morries' guests on a Saturday. Have some flyers about the site to hand out. It's a win win for Morries and us.

The Go-Kart racing in Kokato would be amazing, comes out to like $50-60 per person if you get X number to commit (10 I think?) you get a tournament w/ practice laps and what not and trophies.

Detail day(s) again would be great. Makes sense to talk to various detail companies (both retailers and those that make the product) and see if they will offer prizes / samples / etc. I think you'd be amazed by how much 'free stuff' is available that could help us make some of these events a lot cooler/more attractive.

We always do a camping trip that Jess sets up later in the summer. A few years ago we did a cabin trip and spent one night in the Clubhouse in Itasca state park, that was amazing. I'd like to see another combined cruise/stay over night type thing, or maybe multiples of them. We have a lot of really great places in the state for this, and if you camp or find places like that cabin that everyone can split it ends up being pretty reasonable.

I certainly will be hosting more poker nights, we just finished getting the downstairs painted and are going to work on the poker room next, as soon as its put back together I'll start those up again. LOL @ TM on my card room name, I like it.

I'll add more here as I think of it.

Also down for a dyno day, if I had a preference I'd like to do it at MAP. We'll definitely need another car group but if it's around the spring time it shouldn't be too difficult to corral 15-20+ cars as most people do winter work. Maybe this will give our site owner some motivation to actually tune his own car to help get another car in the mix and to see his new numbers...

Spring cruise - definitely in provided date and my car's ready.

As for other events including weekly ones - I'd like to attend more but the defining variable for me has been location location location. I'll always be at the C&C meets and there's usually a sprinkling of members here that attend. Having more of a presence there is always a good thing, even if you guys get stuffed in the corner with the SRT Neon crew. If we had weekly meet turnouts in the past like 2009 Porky's I'd have more motivation to attend. I really enjoyed that year with you guys.

Bowling league, billiards league, darts league. Poker, Big Buck Hunter, Rockband etc meets are never bad ideas. Just depends on member traffic / consistency we can get.

I'm always up for install days @ BAG.

The local GM guys are setting up a Guns and BBQ today at a local range. Not sure how many people we could get for that, but it's a different idea.

Like Picklz, I'll add more as time goes on....

Owl Exterminator!!
Awesome ideas guys, thanks. I'll be adding/editing my first post later tonight and incuding a better organized list of potential. Events including important thoughts about them.

Come on fellas. 2 posts?! You don't have to own a Corvette to be in here. The whole purpose of getting this stuff together is to better unite the group here. Don't have any ideas? Share your thoughts on anything here. Ideas you are particularly fond of? Ideas you see issues with? Anything you think would make an event better? Speak up and get involved. The more people we get enthusiastic about it, the better our events will be.

I'M OFFENDED!
The BIG one is this coming spring. We need to decide if we're gonna do Wagners, or if we're going to take a wild shot in the dark and try and recrew with what became MNMgaragegeeks. Their meets are SERIOUS... 50+ cars on any given Wednesday. Jon was telling me that the drama there is nil, not like what it was at Porkys towards the end. I've gotten word that they've REALLY done a good job clamping down on the bullshit that got a target painted on us a few years back. Beyond that, I like what I see so far.

 @ Vette' owners posting first.

I echo what JT said, if the weather/roads are good and my car is ready spring cruise is a do want.

The shooting + BBQ would be awesome, I was considering trying to get a group together to go to Bills when they have their next Shooting show (this spring) but combining it with a BBQ/Cookout or something would be awesome. I also have access to a range less than 5 minutes from Grand Casino Hinckley we could probably use FYI.

As far as the Wednesday meets go, I'm not opposed to trying Wednesdays @ Sonic with those guys, if what you say is the case and the BS / Drama is gone I think it would be fun, but I have no time for the stuff that was going on at Porkys before it shut down. I like the location too since it's on my way home from work, more central would be nice for the north crowd (myself included in that) but it's hard to find a location that fits everyone's needs.

Bowling league could be fun - depending on schedule/time/location.

Owl Exterminator!!
My thoughts on bowling is that it would be fun. But getting a decent group together would be tough. Due to costs, time, location, ect. But maybe one or two just "bowling nights" would be cool. I know you can get good group deals at most alleys.

Shooting would be fun, but is a small group of people willing and able to participate. I'd be down. But I don't think it would be a very big event with just this group.

For weekly meets, I don't have much. I doubtfully will make it to any, but am still more than willing to organize. Perhaps a poll is in order since it seems to be a peoples choice type thing. Join with garagegeeks, hold to wagners, or start fresh with new time and/or place.

Keep the input coming guys.

I will be in on the dyno day for sure. I need to know where I start with das auto.

Most things after August will be a go for me before that i have a lot of school stuff going on.

I think you guys should highly consider partnering up with Garage Geeks. Central location, guaranteed good amount of exposure (hell, we struggled to get 4 cars a week at the meets last year), and familiar faces. I'd personally be much more inclined to attend knowing there will always be a good crowd.

ohsixspeedsix

Owl Exterminator!!
+1 for that. Garage Geeks has my vote. The crowds all year at wagners were pretty pathetic. It would be nice to take a night off of work and end up at a meet with a decent group.

YSOSLO

is the word, beotch
I'd love to see about trying to get some kind of weekly or bi-weekly winter meet going again like we used to do years ago, if it's feasible for anyone. Saw Psycho Suzie's on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives over the weekend and realized it's in Nordeast Mpls with plenty of parking and the food looked phenomenal if that sounds cool to anyone. Just a thought. Hell, even if it was just once a month...call it the 3rd Wednesday of every month or any other arbitrary day that works for people. Just a chance to get together and see what people are up to, ya know?

I'd love to see some winter get togethers also. I'd love to have a few on the weekends since I work STUPID F*%$ING NIGHTS!!! But if people like to use wednesdays for that type of thing, run it by everyone or me and we'll see what we can do. Besides, I can't get into psycho suzies after 9 o'clock anyways on a count of not being 21 yet. I did see that episode though!

FWIW I would suggested once a month or at most every 2 weeks. Weekly meets especially in the winter tend to be too often IMO, people are more likely to make it when the meets are a bit more spread out.

Owl Exterminator!!
I agree picklz. Also I'd like to slip in a event idea here. lol. I wanted to do it last year but things were crazy. But I think if we could get enough people together. A big MNMazda baseball/kickball/softball game would be sweet. If we could get at the very least maybe 8-18 people it would be sick! Just take a day, play some ball, and maybe do some bbqin'. We are american after all!

Nothing with throwing a ton of things. Ask picklz what happened to my shoulder after a weekend of DG. I think I have a major shoulder issue. But kickball is fly, and can be played both sober, and inebriated.
