Synapse BOV

Looking at buying this instead of the HKS SSQV. Cheapest I found was $220 shipped. Anything I should be aware of before committing? Seems to be the best unit out there and on the MS3 it's proved to hold 2-3 PSI over stock.

The price doesn't bother me, compared to the $280+ HKS.

Got my hks ssqv for just under $200 from MAP, still waiting on a flange, but that's only about $40, or even less possibly.

What are the gains over stock from a BOV/BPV??? Other then to hold boost.

Is there really a big diff between them??

Or is it more like the CAI thing where my car stock made more horsepower then a car with a AEM CAI.

I know the stocker BPV is not that good but is there really an advantage to getting the HKS over say a forge??

@Speed6 Guy

If the stock BOV is leaking boost (I know they do in the speed3 up after 5k rpm or so), there will be performance gains since you're boosting more than you were before the switch.

Otherwise... it's simply a sound. Some people like the "PSSSSHHHEHWEWHEEWJESUSCHRISTIAMAFUCKINGRICER" every time they shift. :p If the speed6 is anything like the 3 though, this change will make for quite a bit more high end power.

As far as HKS vs other models.. it has to do with responsiveness and bore. Higher bore (38mm or more) is higher flow, which dumps the air real quick and has a higher success rate of stopping compressor surge than say a plastic 24mm stocker that flows less than a stock exhaust on a geo metro. You also get into styles -- the SSQV is really loud, and actually CAUSES compressor surge from what I'm hearing (due to the flutter of the valve). The best type of valve is a straight up piston design venting to atmosphere or recircing (the former works better, but is really loud).

At any rate... $220 is pretty steep for a BOV. IIRC I got my Forge for like $80? I dunno anymore.

From what I've read, this type of BOV is pretty revolutionary. It completely eliminates the use of a diaphragm, giving it faster response while eliminating compressor surge. It uses a pull-type actuated piston and poppet valve that's completely closed when there's no boost, and opens to allow flow as necessary.

The sound is just a benefit (yes I enjoy the sound, but not the obnoxious PPSSSHHH), just something to say "o hai!"

No way am I going VTA either. I've read that during shifts the injectors send tons of fuel which gets dumped into the cats and destroys them after just a few thousand miles. I'll probably be gutting the cats later, but the DISI was just not meant to run VTA.

^ I haven't grown on the sound of that one yet, I'd have to hear it in person. I've heard solid things about it though, and the price is right!

PSSHH-CHNK!

The classic descripion: it's like mario collecting coins under your hood... lol
Totally off topic, but reminds me of the "Mario Twins" video made by the guys who did "End of ze World," and "Schfifty five" and all that other stuff lol.

ive got the synapse on my car and i love it! it holds boost like a champ! you can feel how fast the pull valve is on the bov if your driving hard or daily. only complaint is the unit is a little large. i had to modify my rubber tubing to get it to fit, but i also have a fmic and other goodies. even recirc is pretty loud but not over done. it goes from a light flutter (similar to the hks) in high invac. or low boost. and loud snap to a swoosh of air being recirced. i got it for the preformance of the unit and i couldnt be happier. i would recommend it for sure!

I work in St. Paul.

I've heard the install is a bit tougher since you have to cut the recirc. tube and a few other different things, I'm sure I'd be fine though.

Well, I got it on with no problems. I cut a section of the plastic intercooler shroud off just so it didn't rest on the BOV.

Overall, I'm very happy with the performance of it. It definitely has more pull all the way to redline and has a much faster response.

However, being that it's the only mod on the car it's also extremely quiet. I can hardly hear it over the engine near redline, but it's got a nice flutter to it in boost.

Ordering the CP-e Xcel intake this week, the sound should be much improved after that.
