I'm new here but sure received a warm welcome so far. Thanks!

As I mentioned in the Intro section, if this post in any way violates rules here, please remove it. The intent is to let as many people as possible know about the opportunity to run your car on a road course. This is a great way to improve your driving and in some cases you might even get a discount on your insurance! This is a driver's school & open track event. It is NOT a race. See below and let me know if you have questions. I really hope some of you can join us.

Track Time Motorsports
Day at the Track
June 2, 2008
Brainerd International Raceway

Please note that there is a $25 discount for those of you that register & pay by the end of February.

I'm going to make some calls to the insurance company and even the dealership to make sure they won't fuck me on my warrenty. I'm going to try and pre register for this one though, looks and sounds like a blast!

It really is a great time. The insurance thing is different from one company to another. Always best to make sure that you are covered. Just make sure that you explain that it is a driver's school and that no part of it is competitive in any way.

I wish that was how insurance companies understood it. They will say that since it happened on a track and the track is not a public roadway that it is different and reject any claim.

Not true in most cases. I'm sure there are insurance companies that would reject a claim, but I've had several people check and have the green light from their insurance company. And as I mentioned, there was one of the guys joining us for this event that will get a discount on his rate with a certificate of completion for this event since it is a driver's school.

In 7 years of events, we have had 1 incident and it was covered by insurance. I also have attended some national events over the years and there were a couple of incidents and they were both covered by insurance. Always best to check with your own company but we have found that in most case you will be covered as long as it isn't competitive.

I personally just don't worry about it. I've done probably 30 or more events and have never had a problem. There are always a couple of cars that go off track but it is nearly always just the car driving off into the grass and then waiting to get back on the track. I've never seen a car hit another car in all the events that I have done. We have very strict rules on passing etc.

I was involved in an accident last summer in Brainerd and my insurance company did not cover it. I have a hard time believing any insurance company would cover anything that happens on the track even if it's called drivers education.

Jeff,

Sorry for your misfortune. As I said, I'm sure there are exceptions. Although I haven't even checked with my insurance company (State Farm), my neighbor has the same company and he asked them for a letter stating that he would be covered. He's an attorney so he is good about covering himself like that.

Update:

Everyone registered for this event will be eligible for a door prize.

13 x 19 Matted Framed photo of your car on the track by RayK. 2-3 week delivery after the event.

Thanks Ray!

There will likely be some other door prizes like TTM Polo shirts, Zaino Polish etc.

As has been mentioned every company is different. If I were me I'd talk to my Agent, bring along all the information about the event, and if it's determined the car would be covered in the event of an accident, get it in writing. Otherwise its a crap shoot IF something were to happen, yes it's pretty rare but it can happen.

I'm sold on the DCTC event, but if we get a few people interested I might be up for this too.

Well said regarding the insurance MrMatt!

I've heard good things about the DCTC events but I haven't attended. Can you point me to some info on that event?

We would sure like to have you check out one of our events sometime. You will get lots of track time. One of the guys on www.tcstangs.com said:

"Todd's events are the best out there if you are looking for driving time. You are limited to your will to drive...

Anyone who has not tried open track yet, needs to sign up for Todd's event. The atmosphere is laid back, BIR rocks (can easily do 200 miles in a day without getting bored) and the instructors are great."

As of right now I am going to say I won't go. I was advised by Progressive that part c of their exclusion details "Racing events". Part d of their exclusion details not covering any claims resulting from any driving on a permenant or temporary race track.

So unless I can change insurance companies for a lower monthly cost and get covers, I won't risk it. Not worth losing a 25k car and still keeping the payments.

You may talk to them or an outside insurance agent and see if you can get a rider to cover the car for a set date or dates, may have to pay a bit to get it but would still let you go, I'd be amazed if that type of coverage wasn't offered by someone.

I'll leave it as an "up in the air" choice right now. I have my sales contact at Brookdale also checking warrenty coverage.

Worst case I don't go to an event like this till I have a 2-3K car I'm not worried about putting into a wall.

That's probably the best way to go, I did a little google-fu and sounds like that type of coverage is hard to come by if your primary insurance company won't cover it. Sad to hear progressive doesn't. I may still check out the DCTC event, but BIR/RA are probably out for me, too large of a risk.

When you think about it, I've seen more issues go wrong on drag racing days and auto cross days, and other events like DCTC. So, this Course at BIR may still get my vote with it's rule set.
