New car time for my GF, discuss!

So my girlfriend's '98(or something) Buick Century got vandalized last week.
(Smashed out rear window, dented roof, beer poured over it)
It's getting fixed under full coverage, but she wants to get a new one since it needs quite a bit of stuff done to it to keep it in good running condition.
She just happened to get a Mazda 6i rental and really likes it. She test drove a few different mazda 6s (2.3 and 3.0 all autos) and seems to think that may be her next car, but she wants to take a few different cars out too to see if she likes something else instead.
So what do you all think of mazda 6's with slushboxes? 2.3 or 3.0?
Should she be considering something else like a Camry, Accord, Jetta?

I had the 6s 3.0L w/ the Auto, I never had any problems with the car, it had enough power to get into traffic but I didn't consider it fast (It's all relative to what your used to driving though).

The manumatic mode was somewhat entertaining. I was never a big fan of the shifting characteristics of the Auto though compared to most other automatics I drove, but again never had a problem with it. Had about 46k on mine when I traded it in. Gas milage wasn't stealler, I drove it hard and was in the low to mid 20's with it (city/hiway mixed).

My buddy has a Jetta with the 6 speed and V6 engine in it (GLI maybe? Not sure) but it moves along really nice, not sure how it would be with an auto (if thats even an option) but I think you could pickup a 6 for less money. Never been a fan of the Accord, the new Camry is nice looking but I haven't driven one.

Also, a Mazda6 is a good buy. They're cheaper than most of the other cars mentioned, and carry a lot more value. Plus you know Jettas as welll as I do and no thanks!

True about the VW, but we were thinking TDI FTW... No arguing with 45-50mpg.

I'm just sketchy on the regular 6- quality and materials wise. I just need to be convinced. Too bad she doesn't want to deal with a manual. Of course I'd rather see another Mazda in the family, so we'll see..

Why couldn't this have happened when you traded your car in? Everyone wins!

As far as the deisel, it'd take you 30k to see a discernable difference in price, since deisel costs so much more than regualer. I'd still say stick with the Mazda, or a Camry. Honda FTL.

Whaaaa? Right now diesel is about $0.40-0.50 cheaper than regular unleaded!


And yes, this should have happened about 2 months ago when car trading was en vogue around here! I coulda cut her a nice deal on a clean ti-grey hatch :D

I would say any Honda is a great choice. Regardless of what other may think, there is still nothing that retains value like a Honda. Plus, they are near the top for maintainence. Or, the new camry is a nice looking car, but I think the pricing came up with the facelift.... Dont quote me though.

I would love for her to get in to a mazda 3, because i'm pretty familiar with them by now... But I think she wants something a little bit bigger. Plus she does like having a v6, although the camry 4 and accord 4 feel a lot zippier then the mazda 6 4 banger.

I think she's looking for used. Granted, a Honda will last forever, but you're not going to get the same for your money as you would out of a comparable Camry/6

She would be down for used, in fact that's kind of what we're looking for. Around 20k miles knocks quite a few $$$ of the sticker.

Turbodiesel has never sounded better though...

If she is looking for a used vehicle, the Honda becomes even more desirable. At the Honda dealers they will do the Honda Certified program. The warranty extends out to 70-100k miles bumper to bumper. I dont recall the specifics, but its better than the original warranty.

well we're going to go test drive a diesel tonight to see if we want to rule that out, after which we'll check out the accord and camry.

You'll have to tell me how that deisel works out. Sounds like a cool idea, but a few things worry me.

Deisels suck to start in the winter.

VW electrics.

It's probably a pimp car other than that.

I checked online- VW diesels = hard to come by these days.

2007 = no diesel's in the line up, but they'll return for next year, incorporating common rail fuel injection instead of their "piezoelectric" injectors, upping power from 100hp to 140hp and some ungodly high amount of torque that I can't remember (still doesn't touch the mazdaspeeds...)

Besides that, you can't get a used one for under 20k with 30,000 miles....
