Minnesota Valley Winter Road Rally

End: Andy's Bar and Tavern, Belle Plaine, MN

About: 100 mile night rally over the best roads of the Minnesota River Valley. All mileages, mostly unpaved. No experience needed to compete.

This is gonna sound really dumb, but- winter rally? I assume this isn't stage rally... I think. I didn't see any mention of needing cages and 6-points. "No experience needed to compete"..... what kinda competing are we talking about?

Hit the link there tom. There are stages. And I think its auto x ruling. And its timed with a points system.

Not a stage rally, Time Speed Distance. It's laid out similar to a stage rally but you run at legal speeds. There are some surprisingly fun roads in the river valleys along the MN river valley but unlike W they are mostly gravel which in the winter is actually better. Navigation is very simple with no speed changes.

Oh nevermind then lol. I misunderstood. You can only go the speed limit though. What's the rally then? Sounds more like a cruise.

In a cruise you just follow each other around, on a rally you have to figure out the course and maintain a speed. It takes time to figure out the route, stop for stop signs etc so you are often late and have to make up time. The checkpoints are usually located on the curviest roads with the most elevation change so just doing the speed limit is a challenge.

It's also on snow, ice, gravel and at night.

I'm considering it... but I need to get new rubber on the MINI, as it's the only car I would do this in.

Rallymaster has a MINI. Although snow tires are way better, I did run the course in a MINI loaner with all season tires and it was OK but if you have summer tires it might be a bit sporty. All depends on the weather between now and then.

Mostly bald summers. Working on getting a spare set off an e30 (who knew the hub bore and bolt pattern was identical?) from a friend of mine. Pending that, might be in. ms3 is on star specs, so that's quite out, and my wife would probably kill me for balling up the car she's using...... and the mx6 won't start currently. Has awesome snows on it, doesn't run. Go figure.
