Ok so I'm in this Human Sexuality class and I have a HUGE presentation due next week on The Sex Industry. For part of my research I'd like to get some people to fill out a survey for me about feelings towards different aspects of the sex industry. Just a few key things I'd like people to remember...

1. Your name will not be shown anywhere in the presentation. I will be using the answers ONLY. If you don't feel comfortable posting them in the thread, feel free to PM them to me.
2. This is for EVERYONE to fill out. Male, female, gay, straight, bi...whatever. All answers are valuable.
3. Most importantly!!! Please put SERIOUS answers. I'm sure I can guess what most of you would say to half of these questions, but please don't give me the obvious. Tell me what you REALLY think and be serious. I don't care how LONG the answers are, just that they are not half assed, joking answers. I will not waste my time with them.

As a whole, I think it's becoming healthier as it becomes more mainstream. I think public attitudes towards the sex industry are finally starting to catch up with private attitudes. I see it generally as a positive thing because a more mainstream sex industry means it can be subject to the same oversights and regulations of other industries and also hopefully improve the quality of people's sex lives by opening up communication and awareness.

Are there certain things in Porn that you feel are simply unacceptable?
The only things that are unacceptable in porn are things that would be unacceptable in the privacy of one's own home. That means things like sex with children, forced or unwilling sexual acts, unwanted violence or abuse. I say "unwanted" in front of violence, because if someone genuinely gets off by getting slapped around, that's their business. Also, the simulation of the above acts, as distasteful as they may be, is perfectly fine.

I think the media's "glorification" of the adult industry is simply tracking with the hyper-sexualization you see in the rest of the entertainment industry. Sex sells--always has, and always will. And, what sells most will generally be the edgiest stuff that fits with current social norms. In other words, from a business perspective, the raunchier and trashier, the better. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of that, but the reality is that the entertainment industry today caters to the lowest common denominator because it's cheapest and easiest.

How would you say your view of porn would differ from that of those in generations past? How do you think views of it will be 30 years from now?
I don't really believe that my view of porn has changed much from how similar people (20-something men) would have viewed it generations ago. I also don't think that population's views will be that much different a few decades down the line either. The sex culture and type of porn that exist may be changing (especially with the advent of the internet), but I don't think views regarding the porn itself are changing much. However, I think the broad general view of porn has relaxed slightly over the years, and will probably continue to do so.

What are some reasons you think people use sex toys?
I'd say the most common reason is variety and exploration. They can serve a range of purposes, from simply helping someone get off during sex, to exploring fantasies in safe and controlled way.

Why do you think there is such a need to hide things like the usage of sex toys?
I think it's that a lot of people simply like to keep the details of their sex life private. The use of sex toys is probably lumped in with other details such as favorite positions and techniques--everyone's sex life has such details, but they aren't necessarily the kind of things people share casually.

What stigmas do you see against Sex Shops?
There is still a huge stigma of them being dens of sin and promoters of perversion. That may have been true in the past, when social norms prohibited any real public discourse on sex, and as a result sex shops were necessarily shady and underground. These days, however, you can find more and more classy, mainstream sex shops that refuse to accept the traditional stigma.

Do you think only a certain type of people go to Sex Shops? If so, what types?
No. People of all walks of life, from the kinkiest to the most straight-laced, go to sex shops. Your traditional brick-and-mortar stores likely see a customer base that is more skewed towards people who are more open about sex, but internet sex shops surely see customers from every imaginable demographic.

What are your feelings towards them? What if one was near your home?
I have no problem with them. In principle, it wouldn't bother me one bit to have one located nearby. Like any other kind of business, it could potentially draw the wrong crowds--and that would bother me, but not the fact that it's a sex shop.

What are your views on strippers? Do you think the stigmas against them are true or false?
My view is that stripping is just a job. I don't believe that the stigmas against them are necessarily 100% true, but I do believe that in a lot of cases, there are emotional or other extenuating factors that draw them to a job that tends to degrade and treat them as objects.

I see it as a positive thing. Too many people subscribe to the sex should be in the bedroom theory, and unfortunately, that just doesn't work anymore. I think rather than place this stigma on it that sex is bad, educate. The more people know, the more they will share, and the less proliferation of diseases we will have.

Are there certain things in Porn that you feel are simply unacceptable?

Kids... but that's about it. As long as two consenting adults (or 6 adults, and a goat) are ok with it, let them do it.

I think it's great. It shows the human side of people that were considered mindless screwing machines. Shows us that they buy groceries and watch TV and do everything we do.

Porn in the past was something generally reserved for men, and kept in secret. With the internet availability of it, it encourages more people to explore what it out there, and make decisions for themselves what to think of it. Leaves it open for discussion as it were.

Change of pace. Trying something new is always worth doing.

I don't think there really is, but a lot of people consider sex toy use to be a deviant act, and don't want to be percieved as some sort of pervert for having a vibrator or some handcuffs.

What stigmas do you see against Sex Shops?

I see the typical dirty movie/guy in a trenchcoat stigma mostly. Many people hear of places like Sexworld or Smitten Kitten and expect them to be places filled with sleaze and people wanking in the corner. In fact, most of the sex shop employees I've come into contact with have been very knowleddable and willing to assist you when making a choice as to what to you with your sex life.

Do you think only a certain type of people go to Sex Shops? If so, what types?

I think only a certain type of person admits to it, but nearly everyone has explored at some point or another. Really, when's the last time you met someone who HADN'T seen porn of some type? Most of it comes from a sex shop.

What are your feelings towards them? What if one was near your home?

I have no problems with them. I lived close to a Fantasy Gifts for a number of years, and found it to be one of the most upstanding businesses in the area. With the assumptions people already make of sex shops, it's good to see that they aren't falling into the stereotype.

How do you feel about strip clubs?

Strip clubs, if they work for you, go for it. I have no problem, they just don't do a whole lot from me. I like to touch what I'm seeing.

What are your views on strippers? Do you think the stigmas against them are true or false?

My views? For whatever reason, that's their job. Working through college, they like to be a bit of an exhibitionist, whatever. No different to me than the garbage man, or a guy that serves me dinner. You gotta get paid, right?

no, I myself have gone to one but not for my own purpose, but as a gag, I bought him a blow up doll called fatty patty, they do have a lot of things at sex shop,s and sex shops exist because of the demand of not only one type of people but because of various types of people that shop at a adult store

As long as It is not in the near a neighborhood or near a school it is acceptable

I think most of the stigmas about are false. Stripers are people and should be treated like normal people,

Overall I think it is at a crossroads. As freedom of sexual acts becomes more mainstream and more sexual acts become legal and acceptable, it takes more to produce extreme porn. Even 60 years ago, "porn" was mostly what we would call burlesque today, skimpy outfits and a lot of tease rather than explicit and very graphic sex in any fetish imaginable. However, there is a real dilemma between fantasy and responsibility in the modern age of AIDS. Bareback videos are making a huge comeback after over a decade of being sidelined, which is a fantasy, but also been derided for being socially irresponsible. Mainstream and acceptability has a price. I see the sex industry as positive in moderation. An indulgence in fantasy and the like is harmless and can even enrich your sex life. However, it should not be a replacement for a life, sex or otherwise.

Are there certain things in Porn that you feel are simply unacceptable?

Anything that is done without consent, whether it be to those who cannot consent (like children or animals) or those who do not consent (whether through force, coercion, threats, or fraud). This does not include rape fantasy and other acts where the fiction is of a lack of consent or ability to consent, but the actual participants are both able to consent and do consent.

I am not familiar with these shows to say. However, I will say when Mary Carey ran for governor of California, and though she didn't win, it really put porn stars more like part of our society than separated from it

Like I said before, 60 years ago, what was called porn wouldn't even qualify today. The major differences in porn, besides the advances in technology is that it has become more varied and more extreme. A proliferation in fetish options to appeal to nearly every taste (and not appeal to many tastes) is out there. I suspect porn will continue to become more cinematic looking, more explicit, and more extreme in the offerings to keep people titillated.

That's a very broad subject, as there is a vast variety of sex toys. I would say most of it is due to adding variety and spice to one's sex life and encounters, to fulfill deep seated needs and desires, and to make up for or enhance the abilities of your partner.

Our society and morality still stem from the Puritans, people who left England because they were too uptight for it. Also, there is an etiquette where sex is considered private... too much so.

What stigmas do you see against Sex Shops?

They are considered to be dirty, sleazy places where degenerates go. Municipalities often attempt to drive them out of their communities by draconian zoning laws where they must be far away from anything possibly respectable. Unfortunately, this can become a self-fulfilling prophecy as many are in less affluent areas of town and can be rather unkempt and run-down, which only serves as vicious cycle.

While only some people will ADMIT they go to sex shops, I don't think there is really a particular demographic. Prostitutes found the Republican convention to be more lucrative than the Democratic one, after all...

They are legitimate businesses that have a place in the community. If one were near my home, I would only ask that it be a nice place where merchandise is of quality and presented nicely versus some trashy shack. Essentially, the same I would want from any business.

I really don't see the point of them, as it's all show, but no action. I would rather watch porn on a big screen instead. Pretty much an expensive waste of time.

My views on strippers is they are using their physical attractiveness to earn a very good living. I think there are enough strippers that hold to the stereotype to perpetuate it, but that they are false to most.
