My insatiable thirst for new toys led me to fly out to San Diego this past thursday to pick this little gem up. (More pics will follow.)

Stopped off at FM on the way back out, she put down 245whp/238wtq @ 13psi on 91 octane, with quite a bit of headroom, methinks.

Flyin' Miata "Big Enchilada" car. (Old style with the Blouch upgraded turbo)

Stock otherwise, save for a nice headunit paired with some Clearwater components (Sounds awesome!), and an Autopower roll bar.


Plans:

1) Re-tune idle (it's an old Hydra 2.5, didn't like the elevation change much)
2) Re-tune PWM Alternator output map (weeeeeeeeeee ECU-controlled output voltage)
2.5) Tires
2.6) get new dyno tune at AIM Tuning, turn boost up to around 17psi
3) "Small" tupperware sideskirts (will cover up the worst dent)
4) Garage Vary eyelids
5) Restore factory lip
6) Add Track Dog splitter
7) Hard top
8) Suspension of some sort. (Maybe FM Vmaxx stage 2 or a nice set of Ohlins.)
9) Autokonexion CF "duckbill" trunk
10) drive the snot out of it


This is just a toy. No plans to race it anytime soon.

Some ridiculous gearing going on... notice that the GPS says i'm only doing 70mph. This is in 6th gear.

Day 2, morning @ FM

My car on Flyin' Miata's lift!

Flyin' Miata skunkwerks! There's a Sunburst Yellow NA rescued from salvage. Apparently the owner Bill Caldell had a soft spot for this color. Also "Nancy," a supercharged NC Miata built for the Targa Newfoundland.

I stopped in for them to throw it on the dyno, install a gauge pod/boost gauge, and just give it a general checking over.

That LS3 miata is a $70k car. :lol: Not one inch of that car was left untouched.


Yep, that was I15! After i realized that trying to drive I15 with the top down was a horrible idea.



Afternoon of Day 2:

We took 65 up and down Grand Mesa. AWESOME twisty road, and at the top, we were at about 11,500ft. Cars had NO power up there.

3500 rpms at 70? Wow, that is some crazy gearing. Did you say it had a swapped rear end or something?

It photographs well, needs a little love, but that color makes up for a lot of it.

It was just about 4500 rpms @ 80mph. Stock rear end, but mazda was DUMB and put a 6spd with a 4.10 in their BOOSTED miata. The old 5spds rev lower at highway speeds in 5th gear than this thing does in 6th. Makes for VERY entertaining acceleration, though. Apparently with a "normal" FM Big Enchilada without upgraded turbo, guys are trapping 106mph in the quarter on just 8psi. I'd say i'm riding around in a 115mph trap car, it straight up INHALES gears like crazy. I wouldn't be surprised to see 120mph traps if i take it to the drag strip after the new dyno tune. S2000s don't like this car much.

The red miata was owned by another guy that was out there from California who was interviewing for the job at FM. Cool guy. Car is stock with intake, exhaust, Fat Cat Motorsports suspension, RT615s, and a Hard Dog roll bar. Handled very well, but ran out of steam pretty badly at 11,000 feet.

It was all i could do to resist interviewing for the job while i was out there. Colorado is the coolest place EVER.

3500 at 70 sounds about right. Thats where my Fb is in 5th, and NAs as well, cant imagine the NB is much different

I re-checked that today... i think the GPS was behind. It's more like 66mph @ 3500 in SIXTH. Blargh!

Might be "right" for a naturally aspirated car, but for a boosted car, it's DUMB. Passing power in 6th isn't lacking, though. :challenge:

Yeah, it seems to be pretty powerful and not insanely hard to use.

But i do want to upgrade to 2.7 anyways, since it's supposed to handle the alternator output better, and has auto-correcting idle. (Which will come in handy next time i make this trip. )
