Engine goes BOOM!

Done and done. If anyone has a place to make this happen, or wants to lend a hand / tools, let me know. I'll provide some beer and food. So far the only option I see is in Jurgen's small garage (if that is still an option?) next weekend. I have a garage down in savage, but do not know what tools I would need to make this work. If you have any other ideas, they will be handsomely rewarded (again, with food and beer.)

I guess it depends on how quick you need it done. Sounds like sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, I don't have the space to do an engine swap, or I'd say bring it by my place, and lets knock it out. Next weekend I bet we could easily scare up enough people to get it done in one day.

I have the usual starter set of sockets and wrenches. I also got 1/2" 1/4" and 3/8" extensions and flex joints too, a deep socket set, the common 1/2" sockets, oh and a shitty set of ratcheting wrenches.

I have a decent ratchet set with all the extensions and drive sizes. Are there any special tools need to do this? The only other thing i realized after talking with Jurgen is that his motor has the manual transmission on it and I have the auto in my car so there my be a bit of monkeying with that as well. I can get the engine hoist if needed from my work.

You're gonna need a hoist. Cause you're gonna have to pull the torque converter from Engine A- and move it to engine B- and remove fly wheel and pressure plate from engine B.

For sure you're going to be looking at some tough-to-bust nuts and bolts on an 04 that has been daily driven in winters. So 1/2" drive sockets and a GOOD breaker bar will be mandatory. A socket for the axle nut would be useful. A heavy deadblow hammer and some good prybars will probably be required at some point.

But for removing an entire engine, having a set of smaller tools is going to be useful as well. There are all kinds of little things that need to be disconnected, so small pliars, compact ratcheting wrenchs, and things like that are probably going to be needed.

Have you considered the minor refurbs that may be useful to do on the motor while it's out? Oil pump, water pump, belts, timing chain, gaskets/seals?

Any need for an impact wrench and such? My old man has one I could grab. i have not really thought too much about anything other that getting an engine out and back in. I'm guessing it depends on the price for all the bits and pieces.

An impact would almost certainly be helpful, but I bet you can get by without.

But forrealz... start soaking your axle nuts in PBlaster like yesterday. I guarantee those are going to be a bitch to remove if you've never had them loosened before.

Soaking my axle nuts? I should know what those are but enlighten me. And what is PBblaster? Like a kick-ass version of WD40?

The axle nut is the thing in the middle of the wheel hub, it holds your axles to the hubs so they don't fall out:

PBlaster, yes, is a penetrating lubricant like WD40, but designed specifically for loosening stuck/rusty nuts and bolts. Axle nuts are commonly very rusty.

Yeah, it's a very large nut that typically requires either a professional grade impact or a VERY long, strong cheater bar to loosen if it hasn't been removed in several years.

Or, ahem, several large breaker bars that end up living up to their name and require you to drive to a shop to get the axle nuts loosened with air tools.

I have a lot of large 1/2 in sockets and cheater bars. What size is that nut?

Also why not remove the axles from the tranny and leave these in. That is how I have done motor swaps in the past.

I just realized that I only posted in the event thread about this. The mechanic never got my message about stopping work on the car and has it all torn up and part are showing up today so I told him to just go ahead and finish it. Kinda sucks but what can you do. Needless to say, no engine swap is needed right now. Sorry guys.

I will be doing suspension components in the next month or two so I will keep you all posted about that. If there is a general consensus about what kind of beer everyone likes, I can brew a batch specifically for MNmazda members that decide to lend a hand. (or supervise)

Keep en eye out for an event thread for that day.

Thanks again for all the offers to lend a hand. The feeling of community and friendliness of this forum is amazing!
