110 HP of FURY!
So I now have two laptops where I can't connect to my wireless netowrk anymore. Some shit about the profile or something, regardless it's annoying.

My main laptop is an ACER and plan to try and restore it to a bare bone fresh start again, but until then I want to be able to get a desktop again to get all my pics, music, and shit on and use for daily work. I'd like something that could run a game like COD MW2 with decent results, without being set up as an all out gaming machine.

First question, is it possible to get a decent setup for $500ish, just for the CPU? I was thinking mwave or similar site for the build unless someone here wants to piece it together and set me up?

I'd also like to eventually go to 3 or 4 monitors. Initially 2 or 3 on the desk, with the 3rd or 4th mounted as the TV via HDI for running Hulu/Netflix in the den.

Update: I'm going to build one with with parts to try and assemble myself.

Budget is $700 tops, not including the monitors, mouse, keyboard, and speakers.

Goal is to be able to handle up to 4 monitors, all by hdmi, and have enough memory and processing power to play games like COD and the like for a few years at least.

I'm going to start with a case from Picklz FS thread.

Although I don't have much experience with AMD processors, that should be a zippy home system. FWIW, the Phenom II X6 ranks up there (price/perf)

As far as four monitors support, how is that supported with onboard graphics (non dedicated card)? You may want to up your mem requirements to 8Gb especially using an onboard card (shared mem)

Also, FWIW and maybe I'm stating the obvious, but the controllers for the SSD's are extremely (or at least used to be) critical for proper/consistent performance. At one point some controllers were flaky and were actually slower than a good HD when performing certain read/writes. Point being make sure the controller (firmware etc.) is up to snuff.

I can only relate to the Intel stuff >I have/use the latest gen of the Intel X25 controller in my HPZ400, unbelievable performance - rock solid.

So I'm revisiting this. Using site like mwave and newegg and similar, I'm trying to start putting a list together on a setup that would work well together.

Anyone been looking at some MB and video cards as of late that would be worth checking into?

Isn't that a bit small though? I'm probablly going to want a 500GB or larger HD.

You can use that for a system drive and get a big HDD for storing files and stuff on. SSD is a HUGE performance bump.

As Dan Said - 60 or 120gb SSD for your OS/Main Apps/Games, and then a 500+ GB for storage is the way to go.

As for doing 3-5 monitors. Some ATi cards can do 3 monitors on one card (two via DVI / HDMI and one via DisplayPort. Depending on what inputs all your monitors/TV's have you may need adapters, Displayport/DVI/HDMI are all compatible with each other more or less for video. Onboard I've rarely if ever seen support for more than 1 or 2 monitors. You might be able to do one on-board if you get a mobo with that capability, and 2-3 via an additional video card.

Multiple Video cards is another option, try and stick with all ATI or all Nvidia cards though to keep yourself from dealing with driver nightmares of epic proportions lol.

I think picklz meant the E3000, not W3000... but anyway. I have the E2000 at picklz recommendation and it's been great so far. Checking out the specs between the two (3000 vs 2000) I didn't see anything that really mattered to me to justify the premium, so check out the E2000 as well.

Also, I have an old WRT54GL that I replaced with the E2000 that I could part with for a small fee. It's already running dd-wrt and was still going strong when I decommissioned it. I upgraded for the gigabit ports offered by the E2000.

i saw cisco has a good price on refurb e3000 routers. might have to give that a shot if it comes recommended fro both dan AND picklz haha.

And colin, i have that page bookmarked. the official method didnt work for me but i may crack open the case and see if it cant be brought up in failsafe mode.

Thanks for the suggestioms.
