Sounds like the actual risk of anything happening, let alone any serious incident, is pretty low. But since the only work required to cover their asses is to have a tech smear some grease on a switch, they are just going to shotgun it.

I think the only reason it would hurt their reputation is because the customers have been through quite a bit of this crap in the past few years. I know I would be annoyed if I had to bring my car in every 6 months for something as dumb as an ungreased window switch.

Honestly, I don't see it causing too big of a problem. You might have a couple people here and there irritated to the point of not buying another Toyota, but it wouldn't be enough to hurt their sales. Their reputation has always been very good so these things aren't major enough in my mind to give them a bad rep.
