Engine Swap Troubles

Car
97 Mazda 626 2.0 5spd

Last weekend I swapped a new engine into my car. I also installed a new clutch, flywheel, front axles, front lower control arms with ball-joints, new crank sensor, timing belt and water pump.

The swap went pretty damn smooth. The engine was a salvage from a 96 626 manual with just over 103,000 on it and with over 170PSI compression.

Now, the car will not start.

The timing was 100% correct, as I put the new tbelt on with the engine on the crane, and it was still good with the setting of the tensioner.
I tested for spark, air, fuel, literally everything. Fuel pressure, starter draw, blah blah blah. No start!

I have been through 3 starters, used, and each exchanged. It sounds like the starters have all been dragging because it'll crank ok for about 5 seconds, and then it's like something just completely stops it, like the starter is dragging. As to this causing the no start, I can't be for sure since it cranks enough to get the car going.

The clutch is bled, so it's not like it's engaged and putting extra drag on the starter.

The crank sensor and fuel injectors ohm out within spec as well.

The car did sit for almost 9 months, so I drained the gas tank and put in 7 gallons of fresh 93 from BP to get it going.
According to OnDemand5, which I log into from my shop, the firing order for my car is 1 4 3 2. Now this is a distributor ignition without a coil feeding it. OnDemand has the firing order for this car, for both auto and manual as 1 4 3 2 with the distributor rotating clockwise. But this is for a distributor with a coil power source. Since I don't have a coil feeding it, I looked around for other Mazda 4 cyl engine firing orders in OnDemand. If found the 98 Protege has the same 2.0 with the same distributor orientation as mine with the same firing order of 1 4 3 2, only the distributor rotating counterclockwise.

So it is just a mechanical seize?

I would say you have lower end issue if it is a mechanical stop but if it just keeps turning over it is a firing order issue.

I actually got it all figured out. I bench tested my starter, it was dragging, so there's the starting problem.
I got it running, barely, running like complete shit. Determined it was the distributor firing on only 3 cyls, and besides that the distributor timing was way off too.

So now I need a used distributor on the cheap, or whatever. It's the only thing keeping the car from leaving the garage.
