AT&T to end "unlimited" data plans...

Seems good to me. 2GB is a lot to use on your phone and 200MB will be cheap enough that a lot more casual users can now have access to a data plan.

Yeah just read through that, seems like it will be just fine to me. I need to go look at how much Data I've used monthly over the past year, I know it's going to be less than 2gb/mo...just wondering how much over 200mb it will be.

The Story Teller....
2GB is alot, however I am constantly tethering my phone to my laptop, which im sure uses alot more data than just using the phone. I dont think I could handle having a limit like that. I like just paying the one set price and using it all that I want and not having to worry about any overage.

As I know very little about this topic, and reading the wailing and gnashing of teeth in the story's comment section... I was just interested to see what people here would have to say about it...

Holy crap, I was just going to make a post about this in the iPhone discussion thread.

I think this is mainly targetted at reducing the damage that tethering will do to their network, now that they are finally offering it for iPhone users. Though current users with an unlimited dataplan will be allowed to keep it for the current rate ($30/mo).

That said, the two different limited packages are 200mb for $15 and 2gb for $25. You get a text when you get close to the limit, and it's +$15 for another 200mb or +$10 for another 1gb.

I just looked up my usage over the past 14 months, and of them,5 times I was over 204800 kb (200mb) data, two those I was less 4000kb and 2000kb over. Though the other 3 I was quite a bit more over. My peak usage was actually last month, at 261,020kb, which ~= 254mb.

It seems like I would be pretty safe dropping down to the 200mb plan and simply paying for the extra data if I needed it (paying the extra $15/month would simply bump me back up to what I'm paying now). Jenny is currently paying for unlimited, though she's never used even close to 100mb. If I had been on the 200mb for $15/mo plan... I would have saved $60-90 over the past 14 months just for myself. Maybe more had I actually cared about my data usage. Add in another $210 for Jenny's dataplan as well.

It seems like a good thing for me.

I am around 400md every month so i could save $5 a month for sure. But i am considering dropping the iphone altogether and getting a basic plan with unlimited texting for the fam and that would save me $30 a month.

I'M OFFENDED!
Seems a little ludicrous to me that ATT is finally getting their shit together and offering tethering, and NOW, they're going to take away unlimited data. It's not the end users fault that ATT's network can't handle the data influx and they're getting pwned. This is why I stick with Tmo.

right, if you need cellular wi-fi for your laptop, you get the appropriate cards and pay for it. Teathering your phone to your laptop is a bit like cheating the system.

I think it is nice to give more options, but to also take some away is frustrating as a consumer. It is nice that they are allowing pre-existing customers to keep the unlimited, but to get rid of it all together (since raising the price would be worse somehow) just doesn't seem right. I would like to think they should have planned ahead. I looked at my usage and there is no way I could get by with 200MB but could do the 2Gig, but somehow I would be much happier getting unlimited for the $5 more and having peace of mind. Its their company and they can make the decisions needed to keep people from taking advantage of their products (tethering in this case), but it is a shame they didn't anticipate this on the front end.

I expect many 'new customers' to be deterred away from AT&T while they are the only one with this pricing model.

According to the article, 65% of their customers use less than 200mb and 98% use less than 2gb. It seems to make a lot of sense for their current customer base. I do agree that completely elinimating the unlimited dataplan, as opposed to just bumping the price up, seems like a dumb decision, but hey.
